With every passing day, our concerns about distinguishing FOOD from FOOD “STUFF“ fades away. Our focus tends to shift from nutritional needs to satiating hunger. Our food choices are selected based on (1) speed, (2) convenience, (3) taste (4) and affordability. This has resulted in a desensitized population that no longer understands the meaning and relevancy of REAL FOOD and the important role it plays in SUSTAINING our lives.
If I asked you to envision “BEEF” and all the ingredients responsible for creating beef, how long do you think the list would be? Pretty darn short! It would basically be BEEF! This is one example of what REAL FOOD IS. Real Food is usually found growing on farms and/or being raised on farms (and/or rivers, streams and oceans.) Yet consumers rarely go to the source (or the sources outlet- The Farmer’s Market) to REGULARLY purchase the FOOD they consume. Most people go to grocery stores that mostly sell FOOD “STUFF” full of chemicals, preservatives and dyes requiring all types of processing to make it edible as well as palatable.
.
If I asked you to envision the following list of chemicals, preservatives and dyes does your mind project an image of FOOD?
Enriched Bleached Wheat Flour [Flour, Reduced Iron, B Vitamins (Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate (B1), Riboflavin (B2), Folic Acid)], Corn Syrup, Sugar, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Water, Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable and/or Animal Shortening (Soybean, Cottonseed and/or Canola Oil, Beef Fat), Whole Eggs, Dextrose. Contains 2% or Less of: Modified Corn Starch, Glucose, Leavenings (Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate, Baking Soda, Monocalcium Phosphate), Sweet Dairy Whey, Soy Protein Isolate, Calcium and Sodium Caseinate, Salt, Mono and Diglycerides, Polysorbate 60, Soy Lecithin, Soy Flour, Cornstarch, Cellulose Gum, Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate, Natural and Artificial Flavors, Sorbic Acid (to Retain Freshness), Yellow 5, Red 40.
Does REAL FOOD usually require 37 ingredients to make it edible? These 37 ingredients create a “PRODUCT” (NOT A FOOD) Americans have consumed since April 6, 1930. Look familiar?
This is just one example of hundreds of thousands of chemical PRODUCTS that destroy the quality of human life as they disguise themselves as “FOOD.”
Each year more and more people are shifting their consumption from FOOD to FOOD “STUFF”(“PRODUCTS.”) Since these chemical “PRODUCTS” are cheap to manufacture and lack nutritional value they are cheap for the consumer to purchase.
FOOD “STUFF” has been proven detrimental and plays a significant role in cardiac disease, diabetes, obesity, stroke and cancer. The reason is simple. FOOD “STUFF” can’t be metabolically processed by the body and interferes with normal healthy cellular function. Over time this leads to DISEASE AND DEATH!
NOT SO CHEAP AFTER ALL
.
Our bodies are designed to consume REAL FOOD. The two main purposes include: (1) NUTRITIONAL NEEDS (2) INFORMATIONAL NEEDS. REAL FOOD provides essential nutrients the body uses for information to maintain HEALTHY bodily function.
There is NO HEALTHY SUBSTITUTE for REAL FOOD!
.
.
Looking for a non-complicated SOLUTION to your FOOD “STUFF” eating problem?
Make 80-90% of what you eat come from a farm and/or stream/river/ocean. If it’s raised under these conditions, it is going to be REAL FOOD. Making this reasonable dietary change from FOOD “STUFF” to REAL FOOD will put you on a path toward achieving better health. Think your body can manage just fine on FOOD “STUFF” because you’re not CURRENTLY experiencing any SYMPTOMS?
.
IT CAN’T.
IT WILL LEAD TO SELF IMPOSED PAINFUL HEALTH COMPLICATIONS IN TIME!
.
I always try to cook fresh versus processed. It can be a bit harder but it tastes better. Of course when I was growing up we couldn’t afford “junk”. Now unfortunately”junk” is cheaper so people are more likely to get it versus real food.

One of the challenges consumer’s face is understanding “COST” is based on TOTAL OUT OF POCKET MONEY. When the cost of health complications are included with cheaper processed foods, it is NOT CHEAPER to buy processed food “STUFF.” We ultimately spend more dollars while we simultaneously sacrifice our quality of living!! We need to look beyond just the dollar cost of healthier foods. Most people do not take the WHOLE PICTURE into account.

Very true!! Unfortunately when moms and dads only can afford what their kids will eat and they themselves won’t eat it…they don’t see the larger picture. All about re-educating and setting a good example.

Wow, everything I want to scream out loud each and every day is in this post. Excellent writing and presentation of much needed info! Now, if only we can get more on board with this “crazy” thought to consume REAL FOOD. 🙂

Finding the right “buttons” to help people see the BIG PICTURE requires approaching the topic from many different perspectives. This is my goal. Hopefully, more people will begin thinking to themselves, “this makes sense!”

Thank you for your post. I agree! The shorter ingredient list, the better! People need to eat REAL FOOD!

I believe more people will begin eating real food if they better understand WHY it’s so important. Hopefully the information I share helps make sense of this.
Thank you for reading and adding your thoughts on the topic.

What can I say, you have hit the nail on the head, once again. Real food outweighs the other on so many levels. Great article Jonathan 🙂

People have not yet learned the relationship between FOOD “STUFF” and DISEASE/DEATH. They don’t believe that food impacts one’s life in such a dramatic way. When health issues arise, they believe the “FIX” is pharmaceutical drugs. No one really THINKS about how illogical this approach to HEALTH and LIFE is.
We pollute our planet and don’t believe REAL negative ramifications will result. We treat our bodies with the same LACK OF RESPECT, yet question, “why me” when we’re diagnosed with a health problem. We need to be more honest with ourselves. Be irresponsible and accept the likely consequences or be responsible and ENJOY the likely outcome.

Yes, the Standard American Diet is very SAD. The apparent convenience of overly processed “food” is indeed an illusion.
Instead of reaching for processed foods when pressed for time, one can prep *some* real foods quickly and easily. For example, I rinse and cut green beans (AKA string beans). I put them in a loosely covered bowl with a little spritz of water and tell the microwave oven to “reheat” them, shutting off when it senses steam. A few minutes later, I have steamed green beans that are good hot or cold. Likewise with cubes of butternut squash or beets. It took just a little experimentation to decide which things should be uncovered promptly and which should be left alone a while to cook further. Different veggies cook at different rates, so it is important to do only one kind at a time.

The day I find people gaining too much weight from overeating healthy vegetables, will be the day I agree to return to 1980’s behavior and STREAK across a nationally televised event! 🙂 .
Seriously, you are correct. Eating healthy doesn’t mean we can eat UNLIMITED QUANTITY without weight and health consequences.

The intent of this article was to distinguish “food” from “food stuff.” I’m glad you enjoyed the pictures, but I’m not quite sure what you mean by “delicious.” Most people don’t describe “HEALTHY EATING” as delicious (although I’m sure it can be.)

I can remember as a child all I knew about food was what was handed to me and what I saw at the grocery store while being pushed around in a shopping cart. Exposure and education is a good start to food nutrition and I think I may have gotten that idea from reading this blog. Thank you for the wise words.

Glad you found this article interesting and beneficial. Without quality health, life can become a “prison” within our own bodies. The earlier this reality hits home, the sooner the changes can be implemented to improve the potential outcome.

I thought this was really well written and although aimed at the American side of things still pertinent to the UK which is rapidly headed the same way. It’s concerning that in my office I’m singled out as I cook everything fresh and eat a high veg and fruit diet. How did we get to this point?

The “westernization” of cultural habits is causing significant health complications across the world. Big Business has promulgated this issue. I do not, however, blame them. They provide products we DEMAND. We do not have a well designed educational approach to correcting this problem. There is a huge disconnect between common behavior and essential lifestyle requirements. Until the educational process is willing to accept additional responsibility to teach (as part a Kindergarten through High School curriculum) and GRADE these children’s knowledge appropriately, these problems will continue to grow. Big business has NO INCENTIVE to alter their current course of manufacturing. The medical industry, in addition, has NO INCENTIVE to alter their approach to disease either.
