Understanding Our Naive Fear Of Disease

LindseyWhy shaking hands is out at the Olympics?

“Olympians are told to fist-bump, not shake hands, to prevent the spread of norovirus.”

Let’s begin this post by excluding the obvious…when skiers are wearing mittens, how does “fist bumping” offer greater protection from bacterial or viral infections than shaking hands? Clearly it doesn’t, but consumers would likely follow these instructions without even considering whether the advice even made any sense!

Now, let’s take it one step further…are we to believe that bacteria and viruses only migrate to the palm surface and finger tips of the hand and exclude the backside of the hand used for “fist bumping”? Are we to believe that bacteria and viruses floating in the air magically exclude themselves from landing on some surfaces of the body exposed to them? When athletes sweat, does one believe “germs” remain on each athlete’s respective body if “fist bumping” is used in place of hand shaking?

We naively continue to accept the fallacy that germ exposure makes us sick!!

Publication1cropped400

A day does not pass in which EVERY person in this world is exposed to bacteria and viruses. Why then, are we not chronically sick from these invasive organisms? The answer is our immune systems respond appropriately in containing these harmful pathogens. It doesn’t require cognitive thinking to combat these “germs”; it requires a STRONG self regulating immune system functioning properly. We pass more “germs” to each other standing in close proximity and simply breathing than we do shaking hands, yet we don’t wear surgical masks to avoid becoming sick on a daily basis.

Publication2cropped400

FIST BUMPING” is NOT the SOLUTION for avoiding compromised health. Supporting our individual immune systems to maximize their defensive response to harmful “germs” is the best approach to achieving healthy outcomes (for the average person).

Prior to the invention of “fist bumping”, when was the last outbreak of disease you remember caused by hand shaking? We are a germophobic society indoctrinated into believing that “germs” must be KILLED in order to survive and remain healthy.

980x300

Although there are rare circumstances where “germs” can be dangerous and  even lethal, the average person in the U.S. would experience fewer episodes of illnesses if they were willing to take greater personal responsibility toward living a BALANCED healthy lifestyle. This lifestyle would be designed to strengthen function and performance while defending against foreign invaders (“GERMS”).

.

This is the basis for achieving and maintaining quality health. “Fist bumping” is not a requirement under these guidelines.

.

Some will argue the “fist bump” is quick and doesn’t expose people to excessive time in contact. Giving a person a “high five” is just as quick. As a matter of fact, we are taught today to sneeze and cough on the BACKSIDE of our hand, or forearm. After we wash our hands we are taught to use the backside of our hands to shut off the water. Are we not exposing the backside of our hands to germs under these circumstances? Are we then not exposing each other to these germs as we “fist bump” as an alternative to shaking hands?

Fist bumping, flu vaccines, and not going outside with wet hair are NOT solutions to supporting immune health. Living a lifestyle that “FEEDS” immune NEEDS optimizes one’s immune system and effectiveness at combating disease. There is NO SUBSTITUTE offered by ANY health professional (medical, chiropractic, osteopathic, naturopathic, etc…) capable of replacing nutritional needs, physical needs, hydration needs, sleep and recovery needs and stress reducing needs necessary for strengthening and supporting optimal immune function.

Prior to the invention of Purell and Lysol, people who chose to FEED their immune needs by following these essential lifestyle patterns of behavior predominantly lived healthy lives. Equally important is recognizing these essential lifestyle patterns have supported and improved our QUALITY OF LIFE.

Every athlete knows to “return to the basic skills” when positive performance results are no longer being achieved. This restores a foundation upon which further improvement becomes possible again. Every consumer should also understand the importance in “returning to FOLLOWING the basic needs” of the body and mind. This too, provides a foundation upon which the immune system can build and strengthen.

.

DON’T LET FEAR GUIDE YOUR DECISION MAKING WHEN IT’S USED BY PROFESSIONALS TO SUPPORT THEIR OWN NEEDS.

.

As a doctor that saw sick patients on a regular basis, I missed 4 days on work in 20+ years of practice (two, 2 day episodes). Since childhood, I have never been vaccinated. I have lived the life I share with you to provide you the choice of experiencing the BEST your body and mind has to offer. If additional steps are needed (ex. vitamins, tinctures, pharmaceuticals, etc…) they should be used as SECONDARY levels of support; not the FOUNDATION that most consumers rely on today.

  1. Well said.

This post (or at least the title) made me think of my parents and their fear of going to the doctor and finding out they had something. Their fear led them to avoiding doctors for dozens of years. When they finally fell ill (father – cancer of the liver and mother – leukemia) it was too late.

    Happy to see you back.

    1. Thank you for the welcoming!!

I think people would have less fear of doctors if they supported healthy lifestyle needs rather than attempting to replace them with pharmaceutical alternatives. Although there is certainly a place and time for medications, they can NEVER replace personal habits and needs we possess. The goal should be healthy natural living…medications should be a TEMPORARY intervention (in most cases) until an overwhelmed body has returned to a state of balance. “FEEDING” this normalized state its essential “NEEDS” should support this healthy outcome and minimize the need for artificial synthetic (pharmaceutical) support.

  2. Glad to see you posting again :). As a kid I can count the number of times I was severely sick on my hands. We may not have had the best of everything but our diets were balanced and we were always outside weather permitting. People have forgotten I think what it was like when we were younger and fast food was not an easy every day option.

    1. The average person doesn’t realize that destructive patterns of behavior and lifestyle impede healthy immune function. Prescriptions add additional chemical stress to the body further weakening immune responses. Until people begin choosing to live their lives in a manner that supports their body’s and mind’s needs, this destructive pattern will perpetuate itself.

  3. My mum always used to say you have to eat a peck of dirt before you die…. In plain language and she kept a clean house but children play in dirt and puddles it washes off but as you say you have to have a good immune system and if you never encounter a germ then you won’t…

    1. Immune health (just like everything else) is about BALANCE. If we don’t support it through healthy living AND allow it to function in times of need (independent of assistance {ex. antibiotics} at least early in the illness process, it will weaken and function sub-optimally. Just like a muscle…if you don’t USE it, you LOSE it!

  4. Great post….thanks….I am enjoying the Olympics, wish they would show more of the medals being given out. but really enjoying the sportsmanship amongst the athletes…..xxkat

    1. Olympics are always fun to watch. These athletes commit so much of their lives to their sports. If the consumer committed a small percentage to their own lives, we’d live in a healthier happier world!

        1. They are motivated. There’s a difference to choose a behavior based on “need” and choosing a behavior based on a “want”. Olympians WANT to win and will compromise some “wants” to achieve their goals.

  5. Yes, breathing is dangerous to our health … haha, sorry I couldn’t resist. You are right, of course, we should help our bodies to fight off disease by living a healthy lifestyle. Our new state president (South Africa) said in his State of the Nation address that the government will be initiating campaigns to introduce healthier lifestyles. The focus will be on the prevention or early treatment of problems like obesity, diabetes, cancer, HIV, etc., and hopefully, education of a nation who still believe that they can eat and drink like kings and not follow a regular exercise programme. That is excellent news.

    1. Hopefully his words will be followed by legitimate ACTION STEPS to improve education and knowledge about personal responsibilities needed to attain quantifiable results!

Most people have some idea about personal needs; it is ACTION STEPS that are typically missing from the solution to this dilemma.

  6. Virtual fist bump on that one. On point as usual. I see clients everyday who are either sick with the flu, have a family member who is, or are worried about contracting the flu or some other type of cold or virus. Being surrounded by sickness recently reminded me that I personally have not had a cold or similar illness in over five years. I think routinely being exposed to germs and viruses is part of the key. I’m a regular gym-goer and of course the equipment that I used to work out has been handled by lots and lots of people throughout the day. I think that this high level of exposure has helped to strengthen my immune response. It’s contrary to the message that is promoted in the popular media that hand sanitizers and antibiotics are they answer to stopping the spread of communicable illnesses. Those factors you mentioned actually are the key to good health but they are often overlooked.

    1. You exemplify my point. Our bodies are typically designed to defend against diseases. Poor repetitive lifestyle choices interfere with our body’s natural ability to perform its intended function. Ill health is NOT typically the result of pharmaceutical deficiencies; it is the result of essential healthy lifestyle need deficiencies.

  8. It’s important that we know these things. We always seem to obsess over the wrong things without questioning. What’s sad is that this irrational fear doesn’t mean that we make right lifestyle choices. Hopefully, we’ll take heed to such information and do things that will benefit our health positively.

    1. Well said. We live in such a “busy” world, we tend to REACT first instead of THINKING about the actual ramifications.

  9. crucial advice once again Jonathan but people somehow prefer that quick fix pill which only masks the symptoms and seldom ever addresses the causes … I too have lived that healthy lifestyle for decades and maybe had two colds, no headaches … sure a couple of major surgeries that I’ve fully recovered from in record time! But no other diseases or daily illness … caring for ourselves should be top priority but greedy professionals will avoid preaching that purely for their own assured ongoing fiscal gain 😦

    1. If you are right, disease will continue to increase throughout the world. It cannot be contained by pharmaceuticals. Nothing is more effective at creating health than the tools we given at birth. Until we learn to utilize them and support them, we will continue to face a growing health crisis.

As long as people remain unaware of this reality by living their lives in their own “family bubbles”, the healthcare industry will continue to capitalize on this weakness. The reality of MORTALITY takes too long to learn. By the time we realize we’ve failed to accept responsibility for our own health NEEDS, we tend to say, “if I only knew then, what I know now”! Unfortunately, this experience and knowledge remains dormant as future generations repeat the same mistakes over and over again.

      1. than maybe we need a group of ardent agitators like the survivors of this last school shooting to take up the cause and make legal changes and have ‘warnings’ on med packets like smokes eg outlaw the big pharma greed, advertise on meds that they are addictive and long term use will cause blindness, etc

    1. Balanced living should be a natural way to grow up. We have deviated so far from this natural path, humans today are gradually having their own DNA modified from scientific experiments. Combinations of genetically modified foods, ingredients in vaccines, environmental toxins, etc… are causing alterations future generations will suffer from. Neurodegenerative changes are ignored by the average consumer because it doesn’t DIRECTLY affect their lives. A.D.D., Autism, Allergy sensitivities, etc… are growing at epidemic rates. Autism alone has gone from 2000-3000 in the late 1980’s to 1 in 45 as of 2014.

Where is the outcry? Where is the media and journalists investigating why these rates have so dramatically risen? When environmental factors (we allow), poor nutrition (we allow), over vaccination with ingredients containing neuro toxicities (we allow) continue unchecked by a population unwilling to get answers, growing rates of diseases will continue. This will provide justification for the pharmaceutical industry to create new vaccines and drugs and the medical industry to administer them. Does anyone truly believe our children are becoming sicker because they’re suffering from a drug deficiency?
