CHOOSING BETWEEN DIFFICULT CHOICES

Publication5cropped400

Life has many challenges; some of which we can’t control. Then there’s the choices we make among the options that are available to us. At face value, some of these options may look DIFFICULT.

Publication1cropped300

They may involve “things” we DON’T WANT TO DO or even ENJOY, but are necessary to develop and maintain the mental and physical health required to LIVE a CHOSEN quality of life.

So many readers comment that PAIN and SUFFERING are necessary before people are willing to change unhealthy lifestyles. I’m not entirely convinced of this. I don’t see people (who value life) placing loaded guns to their head and pulling the trigger just because they haven’t experienced the PAIN or SUFFERING of a bullet. I believe those people living unhealthy lifestyles simply don’t equate these unhealthy habits with “Russian Roulette.” In reality, the PRIMARY difference between the two is the time frame it takes to experience PAIN and/or SUFFERING. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, elevated blood sugar, overweight/obesity, etc… are merely stepping stones (often without accompanying symptoms) toward the eventual outcome of PAIN, SUFFERING and LIFE THREATENING DISEASES.

Have you even associated your unhealthy lifestyle habits with any of the following diseases?

CARDIAC DISEASE, DIABETES, CANCER, STROKE, LIVER DISEASE, KIDNEY DISEASE, GASTROINTESTINAL DISEASE OR CANCER

YOU SHOULD!

Unhealthy lifestyle habits are the leading CAUSES of these diseases?

If life isn’t challenging enough, why would anyone CHOOSE to complicate it further by avoiding ESSENTIAL lifestyle habits necessary for achieving quality HEALTH? Do people truly “believe” the renewable pharmaceutical prescription “option” offers a viable pathway to good health? This pathway (by itself)

PREVENTS the RESTORATION of GOOD HEALTH

Its goal is designed to achieve a stable form of CHRONIC DISEASE. You know these diseases by name: High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, Diabetes, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, etc… This approach leads to an increasing number of new drugs prescribed with increasing required quantities that begin dictating and controlling the terms by which life is lived!

One drug will have to be taken on an empty stomach; one drug will require food; one drug will cause “side effects”; one drug will counteract these side effects; one drug will require a decrease in food types (ex. carbohydrates); one drug will interfere with sleep; one drug will cause headaches; one drug will stimulate appetite causing weight gain; one drug will cause lethargy.

CARDIAC DISEASE, DIABETES, CANCER, STROKE, LIVER DISEASE, KIDNEY DISEASE, GASTROINTESTINAL DISEASE OR CANCER

ANYWAY!

That’s right, it DOESN’T prevent the outcome of these diseases. At best, it slows down their progression.

SO WHY DON’T WE FEAR THESE DISEASES?

.

…maybe because these are the faces of what these diseases look like…

Publication3CROPPED400

It doesn’t create FEAR. These diseases HIDE behind smiling facial expressions. This, however, doesn’t reduce the PAIN and SUFFERING they’ve gone through (and will continue to go through in the future for those still alive.)

This is probably not the

IMAGE OF DISEASE

you expected, but this is the REALITY of what these DISEASES look like.

Being healthy is NOT about magic; it’s NOT primarily about good luck.

IT’S ABOUT MAKING DIFFICULT CHOICES; IT’S ABOUT VALUING LIFE; IT’S ABOUT SELF COMMITMENT; IT’S ABOUT REDUCING OR ELIMINATING THE NEED FOR PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION.

IT’S ABOUT FINDING JOY AND HAPPINESS IN HEALTHY LIVING!

  2. Health is a long-term commitment – well said! You’ll never ‘feel’ like living healthily so you have to force yourself. Thank you for the reminder.

    1. The attitude about “feeling” like living a healthier life becomes much more palatable when the benefits are experienced and REALIZED. It’s not about SACRIFICING behaviors; it’s about incorporating behaviors that provide greater opportunities to achieve “things” in life that otherwise would be UNACHIEVABLE. Creating a mindset to think in these terms makes approaching a healthy lifestyle significantly easier.

      1. Indeed, you need the right mindset and perspective before any long-lasting change can occur!

  3. You have to want to make a change before you can. Nothing good is easy…I wished more people understood that.

    1. This is why I repeatedly state how important the MINDSET is prior to implementing any approach to CHANGE. It’s not about “trying;” it’s about recognizing SELF VALUE and the commitment to oneself (through lifestyle changes) required to achieve the quality of life DESERVED! Once the mind accepts this fundamental CONCEPT as TRUTH (rather than seeing this approach as ideological WORDS,) the willingness to overcome obstacles becomes possible.

  7. When you showed those celebrities, you reminded me that people are so much more than their illness.. and that we don’t have to stop living.. plus we can improve our health with the right choices. Motivating post!

    1. People have a tendency of viewing diseases in their end stages. Early diseases do not necessarily interfere with one’s quality of life. This, however, doesn’t mean serious problems don’t exist. If we simply chose to be more RESPECTFUL to our bodies and minds by providing them the quality essentials needed, emotional and physical well being would be experienced by so many more people. This doesn’t mean seeking perfection; it means creating a HEALTHY BALANCE that achieves personal desirable goals.

  8. I love your final comment, Jonathan – finding joy and happiness in healthy living. It’s a motto I live by. Any sacrifices made along the way are completely worth it.

  9. Great message as usual! Interesting pictures too of the celebrities and their diseases. You’re right, those are not generally the faces I would normally associate with sickness. The right mindset sure is important, just getting people to understand that is the challenge as you know. That’s why your blog is so powerful, it really gets that point across well.

    1. Thank you Tricia. My goal is to get people involved by simply THINKING more about these topics. They affect so many lives including those who read these posts. Many, however, do not experience symptoms yet, and therefore, do not recognize the impact. Hopefully, this information will provide some direction to those willing to take greater responsibility for their lives.
