Great video, Dr. Jonathan! I think you have provided a wonderfully useful tool for folks like me who don’t go the personal trainer route and also don’t care much for health clubs. Also, the fact that you demonstrate each exercise gives the viewer an example of perfect form. This is a nearly no-cost technique with results which you have documented. Many thanks!

Thank you Tony. Glad you found the video useful. I know how much you like to ride the bike (which is great cardio training), but resistive exercise is also important to maintain lean body mass to functionally handle life’s physical requirements. It also is a great protector from bone demineralization (osteopenia and/or osteoporosis.)

I think you give an excellent demonstration of correct form. It ought to go viral.

Thanks for the sentiment, Tony. If it motivates one person to commit themselves to exercising for the rest of their life resulting in an improved quality of living, I will consider it a success.
Since the term “exercise” negatively impacts so many minds, I wanted to show the REALITY, SAFETY, CONVENIENCE and RESULTS that are possible if one is willing to simply begin the process. People agree all the time; exercise is NOT the hard part, getting dressed to exercise or driving to the exercise facility is the hurdle to overcome!

You are right. If we call it ‘activity’ or ‘movement’it seems less forbidding.

Really useful video! I will definitely have to incorperate some of it into my weekly workout routine!

Just wanted to show that exercise did not have to be as complicated as many think. It can be successfully competed in a relatively short period of time achieving safe, effective results.

Wow ! that is fantastic. You can pretty much do anything with your gym machine. I noticed little Tucker in the backround, he didn’t look too phased about anything as he probably sees you working out everyday 🙂 Thanks Jonathan, you have perked my interest to try new things.

I don’t know if THE TOTAL GYM is a product available where you live. Based on the weight loss program I devised, they flew from California to North Carolina to film me in their commercial. I attached the link FYI.

How did I miss this post this weekend? Ha.
This is awesome, Dr. J!
I love my total gym….my favorite exercise is the oblique twist….this is a decent second to the oblique machines found in gyms. It’s too bulky for home, but the twist done on the TG works great.
Love the pic of you and honey bunny! Have a wonderful week!

It’s a great piece of equipment that is easy for the average consumer to use safely and effectively.
Thank you for the compliment. My wife never likes the pictures I use of her. She really is a beautiful woman and looks years younger than her age.
Hope you’re enjoying your week so far. Tomorrow is “hump day!”

Tucker is the best kind of partner. He doesn’t talk your ear off while your training! So funny. Curious, is this your only resistance training? Have you ever done power-lifting?

Tucker is a wonderful training partner. He makes me eke out the final repetition by STARING at me.
I train in two different gyms. I don’t power lift, by I do varying routines which include “heavy” lifting days and “lighter” (higher repetition) days. I do cardio 4-5 times a week in addition. This training has helped me maintain a physical quality of life I truly love. I enjoy playing sports, riding a street bicycle, hiking, etc… I attribute my lifestyle to the years of dedication I have committed to this important component of life.

I wanted to show people that exercise can be convenient, relatively simple, safe and effective without having to head to the gym. The “mental” component of exercise commonly interferes with the commitment to improving ones functional abilities in life. Getting older with less function reduces the quality of living as we age. We can dramatically improve this outcome if we devote a small amount of time to this endeavor. Aren’t we worth it?

Thank you very much for the kind words. Sometimes visual education creates a greater reality to an experience than the written word. I hope people see that resistive exercise doesn’t have to be a “brutal,” “grunting,” “dreaded” experience mentally exhausting and physically painful. It is anything that helps improve functional movement while attaining (or maintaining) lean muscle tone. As one appreciates these benefits, higher standards of quality living become achievable.

Glad you liked it. It was my attempt to show exercise doesn’t require great amounts of time or expense. It can (SUCCESSFULLY) be accomplished in one’s home (if the gym environment is unappealing) and improve individual function necessary to enjoy quality living.

This post actually showed up for me again, and I’m glad it did. This was that oh-so-important lean muscle I mentioned before. Do you have anything for the hip flexors, glutes, calves and ankles that I may be missing? The lunges are great of course, and squats, but anything else? ☺
