BALANCING LIFE

It doesn’t matter what your goals in life may be; the path toward HEALTHY achievement ALWAYS requires:

BALANCE!

We try to isolate our problem area(s) to focus and fix these individual concerns. They may TEMPORARILY show some improvement, but LIFE often gets “in the way” and the problems resurface once again. We find ourselves constantly attempting one step forward to only find ourselves two steps back. Whether it’s weight issues, financial issues, marriage issues, family issues or health issues, we usually find consistency in our INABILITY to create LONG TERM REALISTIC SOLUTIONS.

.

WHY DO WE SHARE THIS COMMON PROBLEM?

.

Solutions are based on a PROCESS that addresses ROOT CAUSES rather than simply addressing SYMPTOMS. All of the ongoing issues mentioned above are the RESULT (in most cases) of band-aid solutions. A marriage isn’t FIXED with a romantic dinner, obesity isn’t FIXED by eating salads, debt isn’t FIXED paying this month’s bill on time, health issues aren’t FIXED by adding “one good habit” to a lengthy list of “bad habits.” Our natural approach to “PROBLEM SOLVING” is searching for a tangible “THING” that resolves the issues. Life is NOT that simple. In most cases it requires an ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT, EFFORT and TIME. In our multitasking fast paced world, this is not consistent with the lifestyle most of us live. Most attempts to correct issues fail because people approach the CONCEPT OF CHANGE backwards. Instead of searching out the various deficiencies in our lives and creating a PROCESS to correct and balance them, we seek out the “DART BOARD SOLUTION.” We throw a dart and HOPE it strikes the “SOLUTION.”

.

CAN YOU SEE WHY WE FAIL SO OFTEN?

.

If you want to discover LONG TERM SOLUTIONS, go back to the picture at the top of this article and examine ALL THE ARROWS in your life. Don’t just spot pick! On a piece of paper use each arrow topic as a heading. Create TWO columns under the heading and write down the areas of deficiencies as well as any positive attributes associated with your behavior. After you do this for ALL 11 HEADINGS, evaluate which headings are out of BALANCE (defined as significantly more deficiencies than positive attributes.) This shows you ALL THE AREAS in LIFE THAT NEED ADDRESSING to FIX the ROOT CAUSES of your PROBLEMS. Seeing it on paper creates a REALITY you can’t envision doing this exercise in your head.

The next step is to create THE PROCESS that ties these deficiencies TOGETHER.

.

EXAMPLE: If deficiencies are found in STRESS, FOOD, EXERCISE, DEBT

.

You might start the PROCESS by incorporating 10 minutes of walking, three days/week. (EXERCISE) On these exercise days, you eat REAL FOOD for breakfast, lunch and dinner. (FOOD) Prepare your food rather than eating out! (DEBT) When you get home from work you create 10 minutes of time to do ANY of the following: listen to music, read, listen to part of a podcast, meditate, stretch. Use this 10 minutes to relax and unwind.  (STRESS)

The PROCESS is NOT set in stone. It will require fine tuning to make sure it is satisfying your individual deficiencies. Since there are 11 headings, you may also require more than one PROCESS to address the different deficiencies. After you implement your PROCESS(ES) revisit your original piece of paper with the 11 headings divided by the two columns (deficiencies and positive attributes) three weeks after you initiate this program. Make sure you adjust the columns if you’re discovering resolution of your deficiencies. Continue this review on a monthly basis. WRITE DOWN A SPECIFIC DAY EACH MONTH TO REINFORCE A COMMITMENT TO REVIEWING THE PROCESS.

As the deficiencies SLOWLY CORRECT, you will begin experiencing BALANCED LIVING. This approach CORRECTS the ROOT CAUSES and creates LONG TERM SUCCESS. We no longer think of (for example) weight as simply a “food problem.” It’s possible an imbalance in family relations is contributing as well. This PROCESS creates a new MINDSET and a new  PATTERN OF BEHAVIOR.

If you try this PROCESS and have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask. You will likely find this approach offers a REALISTIC SOLUTION while increasing your CONFIDENCE and CONTROL resulting in a BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE!

        1. The PROCESS I describe is designed to “dig deeper” to unveil the important problems/deficiencies that need addressing. Each person must create their own “DESIGN.” This plan gives them the freedom to choose whatever pace is comfortable. It’s like a jigsaw puzzle. It doesn’t matter if it’s 50 pieces or 5000 pieces. One must first identify the piece of the puzzle, (THE DEFICIENCY) analyze what it takes to make it fit (OVERCOMING THE DEFICIENCY) and repeat the PROCESS. In the end, applying all the pieces specifically where they belong creates a COMPLETE PICTURE. The same is true when people specifically ADDRESS their deficiencies creating improved BALANCE and an appreciation for a more COMPLETE LIFE.

This PROCESS, however, requires people to VALUE themselves enough to invest the time and effort into self improvement through better self awareness. This is a difficult task. For many different reasons, people do NOT VALUE themselves. In addition, digging deeper into ROOT CAUSES often makes people face DEEPER ROOTED FEARS. I believe this is another reason why people frequently approach problems/SYMPTOMS on a superficial level with band-aide remedies.

          1. I am a big fan of self discipline and the importance of creating a daily routine for self care which includes introspection.

  1. Great post and an extremely useful exercise. I hope your readers care enough about themselves to set aside the time to evaluate their balance. I know I will be!

    1. It is so much less difficult and stressful to create a PROCESS to correct our deficiencies than try to deal with each deficiency individually. Most people have never been taught or shown this method. It just makes sense to FIX ROOT CAUSES of problems.

  2. What a great tool! Thankyou for sharing – yes, I will be sitting down to do the exercise in the next few days. Will be very interesting to see the results and even more so attempting to juggle the balancing act. Though I imagine once the groundwork is in place, it should become easier. Cheers

    1. You are correct. Once the lists are established, creating the PROCESS becomes much simpler. Seeing the various deficiencies on paper reveals the depth of the actual problems (rather than simply the superficial SYMPTOMS.) Once the CORRECTIVE PATTERN is created and laid down people tend to RESPOND rather than REACT to future challenges. The volatility that used to easily overwhelm us no longer negatively impacts our lives. We have CONTROL, CONFIDENCE and CLARITY as we follow this new path to achieving our desired GOALS!

    1. I spent a lot of time trying to discover a method that could be used to address and correct ROOT CAUSE issues in people’s lives. This approach only requires one to be HONEST, MOTIVATED and DETERMINED to achieve a better path in life. It is structured so anyone can do it and creates its own positive and negative feedback. This helps each individual navigate any fine tuning needed when creating their own unique PROCESS. I hope you enjoy the exercise and achieve the results you desire!

    1. It also helps explain any deficiency impeding forward movement in life. This PROCESS is designed for those IN AND OUT of BALANCE. It reinforces the pathway for those IN BALANCE and helps identify ROOT ISSUES for those OUT of BALANCE.

    1. You have described a history of problems that you’ve had to deal with in the past. This PROCESS I describe is a great TOOL to use to unveil the challenges and ADDRESS them in a MEANINGFUL way creating a less RESISTANT PATH forward. It reduces the “weight” of pain, anger, fear and other destructive negative emotions and places you in CONTROL of you ACTIONS and REACTIONS.

I am NOT trying to tell you what to do. It is simply an observation based on your blog site writings. Have a great weekend.

    1. So glad you liked it. It provides a “concrete” method to a “abstract” problem. It exposes people to thinking differently about problems and issues and gives them a method overcoming their individual dilemmas. It’s a great starting point for those who are tired of being “tired and frustrated” with life.

    1. Thank you so much. My goal is to get people THINKING and CONSIDERING their own personal HABITS. Do they ADD TO or INTERFERE with their quality of life. People can’t change course if they aren’t aware a problem may exist. My mission is to share these ideas to help those seeking alternative healthier paths.

  9. The thing I like about this post is that you focus on long term solutions that address things at the root, rather than putting band aids on problems. While that might be more painful and annoying in the short term, it is of incalculable importance to long term success and the maintenance of your sanity. Wise words… thanks for sharing.

    1. I appreciate your feedback. As a doctor, it became too frustrated following standards of care designed to maintain chronic health. I chose a different path (not judging any other physician’s choice) and never turned back. I continue in retirement sharing these concepts to help those seeking options to elevating their quality of health and life.

      1. Yeah… it’s funny how we have taken modern medicine about as far as we can, and it still isn’t working to permanently reverse some conditions. Modern medicine is great for traumatic athletic injuries, car wrecks and stuff, but doesn’t seem to be answering the call for more chronic conditions.
