It doesn’t matter what your goals in life may be; the path toward HEALTHY achievement ALWAYS requires:
We try to isolate our problem area(s) to focus and fix these individual concerns. They may TEMPORARILY show some improvement, but LIFE often gets “in the way” and the problems resurface once again. We find ourselves constantly attempting one step forward to only find ourselves two steps back. Whether it’s weight issues, financial issues, marriage issues, family issues or health issues, we usually find consistency in our INABILITY to create LONG TERM REALISTIC SOLUTIONS.
WHY DO WE SHARE THIS COMMON PROBLEM?
Solutions are based on a PROCESS that addresses ROOT CAUSES rather than simply addressing SYMPTOMS. All of the ongoing issues mentioned above are the RESULT (in most cases) of band-aid solutions. A marriage isn’t FIXED with a romantic dinner, obesity isn’t FIXED by eating salads, debt isn’t FIXED paying this month’s bill on time, health issues aren’t FIXED by adding “one good habit” to a lengthy list of “bad habits.” Our natural approach to “PROBLEM SOLVING” is searching for a tangible “THING” that resolves the issues. Life is NOT that simple. In most cases it requires an ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT, EFFORT and TIME. In our multitasking fast paced world, this is not consistent with the lifestyle most of us live. Most attempts to correct issues fail because people approach the CONCEPT OF CHANGE backwards. Instead of searching out the various deficiencies in our lives and creating a PROCESS to correct and balance them, we seek out the “DART BOARD SOLUTION.” We throw a dart and HOPE it strikes the “SOLUTION.”
CAN YOU SEE WHY WE FAIL SO OFTEN?
If you want to discover LONG TERM SOLUTIONS, go back to the picture at the top of this article and examine ALL THE ARROWS in your life. Don’t just spot pick! On a piece of paper use each arrow topic as a heading. Create TWO columns under the heading and write down the areas of deficiencies as well as any positive attributes associated with your behavior. After you do this for ALL 11 HEADINGS, evaluate which headings are out of BALANCE (defined as significantly more deficiencies than positive attributes.) This shows you ALL THE AREAS in LIFE THAT NEED ADDRESSING to FIX the ROOT CAUSES of your PROBLEMS. Seeing it on paper creates a REALITY you can’t envision doing this exercise in your head.
The next step is to create THE PROCESS that ties these deficiencies TOGETHER.
EXAMPLE: If deficiencies are found in STRESS, FOOD, EXERCISE, DEBT
You might start the PROCESS by incorporating 10 minutes of walking, three days/week. (EXERCISE) On these exercise days, you eat REAL FOOD for breakfast, lunch and dinner. (FOOD) Prepare your food rather than eating out! (DEBT) When you get home from work you create 10 minutes of time to do ANY of the following: listen to music, read, listen to part of a podcast, meditate, stretch. Use this 10 minutes to relax and unwind. (STRESS)
The PROCESS is NOT set in stone. It will require fine tuning to make sure it is satisfying your individual deficiencies. Since there are 11 headings, you may also require more than one PROCESS to address the different deficiencies. After you implement your PROCESS(ES) revisit your original piece of paper with the 11 headings divided by the two columns (deficiencies and positive attributes) three weeks after you initiate this program. Make sure you adjust the columns if you’re discovering resolution of your deficiencies. Continue this review on a monthly basis. WRITE DOWN A SPECIFIC DAY EACH MONTH TO REINFORCE A COMMITMENT TO REVIEWING THE PROCESS.
As the deficiencies SLOWLY CORRECT, you will begin experiencing BALANCED LIVING. This approach CORRECTS the ROOT CAUSES and creates LONG TERM SUCCESS. We no longer think of (for example) weight as simply a “food problem.” It’s possible an imbalance in family relations is contributing as well. This PROCESS creates a new MINDSET and a new PATTERN OF BEHAVIOR.
