ERADICATING DISEASE BY CONQUERING “GERMS:” AN EXERCISE IN FUTILITY

img01-425How can I make such an ARROGANT statement when the scientific community with significantly more experience and knowledge has claimed to have already eradicated disease (ex. Small Pox?) What scientific facts do I base my “assumptions” on?

I base my assumptions on:

  1. THE LAWS OF EXISTENCE

  2. THE REALITY OF HUMAN BEHAVIOR

.

THE LAWS OF EXISTENCE:

We have all heard the phrase “the strong will survive.” Viruses, bacteria and other pathogen’s (“germs”) survival is based on this same fundamental TRUTH. These organisms have survival capabilities that far exceed our science and understanding. As we develop new medical technologies for combating these “germs,” they mutate in various ways to survive. Three such examples include:

  1. disguising themselves by altering their genetic makeup.

  2. altering the design of their protective membrane (the coat that surrounds the “germ) interfering with our immune system’s ability to “recognize” and “attack” them.

  3. becoming “invisible” by hiding within a “normal” healthy cell and remaining dormant (“sleeping”) until the immune response “retreats” assuming the battle has been won.

According to an article published by the National Institute of Health entitled, Human viruses: discovery and emergence the following point was stated:

“It seems almost inevitable that new human viruses will continue to emerge.”

Focusing so much attention on “chasing” these newly discovered viruses in an effort to “protect” human health has proven costly and inefficient. It continues to reinforce the DISEASE MODEL of  “health care” based on the belief that “killing germs” creates GOOD HEALTH. With an infinite number of variations and mutations, this approach will never be able to ERADICATE these pathogens.

.

THE REALITY OF HUMAN BEHAVIOR:

Human behavior has negatively impacted our ability to combat “germs” NATURALLY. Human behavior (to a large extent) has focused so much on INSTANT PLEASURE that GRATIFICATION has overtaken our cognitive rational thinking at a cost of personal health. These behaviors (ex. poor dietary habits, lack of exercise, poor sleep, emotional distress, etc…) are NOT EQUATED with disease. Based on this truthful observation (over my years in clinical practice,) the average individual has become the PRIMARY CAUSE of his or her own body’s gradual destruction and inability to combat pathogens (“germs.”) We have CHOSEN to believe our damaging lifestyles can be CONTROLLED through medical intervention replacing the need for personal responsibility for our own behaviors.

THIS, IN REALITY, IS SELF DECEPTION!

.

A BETTER APPROACH:

Based on the LAWS OF EXISTENCE, our time and energy would be better spent focusing on LIFESTYLE ESSENTIALS that support GOOD HEALTH than the world of pathogens that ONLY BECOME HARMFUL GERMS when an opportunity arises for them.  Germs seek opportunity. When one is “unavailable” they do NOT CAUSE HARM!

.

GERMS (IN AND OF THEMSELVES) DO NOT CAUSE DISEASE.

.

Compromised people (as a result of compromised lifestyles)

create an environment that SUPPORT GERMS and ULTIMATELY THE DISEASES THEY’RE ASSOCIATED WITH.

Since “germs” are capable of undergoing structural and genetic alterations to maintain their survival, it becomes futile to develop stronger and more lethal drugs that destroy the quality of human life while creating more virulent pathogens (SUPER BUGS) in the process. A better answer is found in:

creating a healthy internal environment through healthy lifestyle BEHAVIORS that PREVENT these “GERMS from overwhelming our immune defenses.

This approach will:

  1. reduce health care expenses

  2. improve function and quality of life

  3. result in fewer illnesses with shorter durations and reduced severities

  4. help the consumer regain CONTROL of their lives

It’s time to recognize this germaphobic attitude has increased our susceptibility to “germ invasion” while creating more virulent strains (SUPER BUGS) resistant to medical interventions. Maybe it’s time to consider strengthening your own body’s defenses by giving it the tools (lifestyle) necessary to RESTORE and MAINTAIN OPTIMAL HEALTH.

SINCE ALL DOCTORS UNANIMOUSLY AGREE A HEALTHY BODY SUPPORTED BY A HEALTHY IMMUNE SYSTEM IS THE BEST DEFENSE AGAINST UNWANTED “GERMS”, WHY WOULD YOU CHOOSE TO CONTINUE TO LIVE A LIFESTYLE THAT CAUSES SELF HARM?

  1. I sure hope that one day you will have your own TV show to reach out to the millions out there to change our destructive habits. The shows on the TV nowadays are more for entertainment than actual facts.

    1. TV networks would NEVER accept my perspective. Major $ sponsors would pull their advertising due to various conflicts of interest. I will, however, provide FREE lectures to the public and share my blog information with anyone seeking constructive ideas especially for those without any resources.
I agree with you about television “health.” It is more about entertaining than offering REALISTIC constructive ideas that people can implement to improve the quality of their lives.

  2. Some good points Dr. I hadn’t considered but you are right. In an age of instant communication around the world instant gratification parallels that access. …Considering consequences, whether health, social or emotionally related may be dropping at a comparable pace…It’s a new age for sure.

  3. I think this is a really helpful ‘beacon’ that directs us to the right place to look for the reason we have health problems. It always comes back to personal responsibility. So many of us have been brainwashed to think a pill or a shot will knock out those germs and make us well again. I think your ideas on being physically healthy parallel Seligman’s ideas on positive psychology. This is from my post on it – “Positive Psychology is the product of Martin Seligman who in 1998 rocked the psychology world by suggesting that there should be two models instead of one for observing patients. The first is the disease model: what’s broken. What needs to be fixed. The second is an optimal functioning model: what’s going right – when we’re at our best.” I think you are also positing an optimal functioning model, and I think it is the best way to approach a healthy life.

    1. Thank you for sharing the details in your comment. You have given me some homework on Martin Seligman. It sounds like our philosophies on health align well. I look forward to this research. Thank you again for offering your insight.

      1. You are entirely welcome. I ‘tripped over’ positive psychology several years ago writing my blog and it has yielded me many physical and mental benefits. Happy to help.

  4. I totally agree. I work with primary school children ( a total breeding ground for germs) yet I never get sick. I credit mainly sleep, I regularly get 7-8 hours but healthy lifestyle in general is the best way to combat these germs

    1. Schools are frequently blamed for the “spreading of illnesses.” I usually ask people why they believe schools “breed” germs but health clubs don’t? All that sweat and dirt creates a “germ infested environment,” yet people that exercise regularly are less inclined to experience sickness. Changing people’s perceptions can be quite challenging.

I wonder sometimes if people are just so unaware of the power they have over their own health…just so uninformed and just so willing to live with the idea that this is just what it is…I do hope all I have changed is the reason I’ve not gotten sick this season. Usually through the month of September on I have bronchitis, sinus colds, chest colds one or all of them here we are into Jan and wow I’m just thinking of this as I type and I’ve had not a one! Thanks Jonathan! Another thought provoking post! 🙂

I have no worries about my renewal! haha! You are so good to say, I really appreciate so much support as much as it wasnt easy for a long time for me the minute I decided that Yes there needs to be a change then it became so simple for me. I am very thankful now for the wieght gain caused by the lyrica to be quite honest. Gaining 30 lbs when I was used to my whole life looking as I was in great shape the gain was so uncomfortable and set me deeper into thinking I needed the meds I was in so much pain…not knowing the meds were causing so much of the pain. Listening to my body and changing my eating started out me to try and ease some of the chronic discomfort putting it mildly here. Then the need to lose weight for back issues and overall I was just so sick of seeing someone in the mirror I just did not even know. So the change begun. Ending the weird meds and any foods that were not as fresh as possible and losing now 38 pounds I just never realized how awesome it could feel to take such good care of me! People set themselves up to fail I believe by wanting to do it all at once and they are too hard on themselves instead of looking at it like it took them years to get to this point of bad eating habits its going to take some time to get past them. I took very small steps each day. One day I gave up butter and stopped buying it. and i worked at that for a week then it was never a thought anymore so I would move on to the next small change. you need to love, respect and have patience with yourself no matter what others around you are doing or saying only listen to yourself and what your body is telling you. Let friends and family go on crash diets just do not follow them for the ride!

        1. Time to join the lecture circuit. Your stories are so relatable. As I read your comments, I think about ALL THE PEOPLE who feel like you used to feel without guidance and hope. I hurt because I know the answers are THERE, but the people must be RECEPTIVE and willing to ACCEPT a different (yet better) way of life. Your stories prove this point. I am thankful that you discovered how VALUABLE your life is. You are TRULY so inspiring.

Wow you are so kind to say! Ive a woman at the gym that wants me to become a coach for people to teach them small steps and to start out with love and understanding for themselves…ease them into it all instead of them feeling so overwhelmed and then failing as if its their fault. If you just dont know how to do something cause I mean some people have maybe forgotten who they were before illness and poor health kicked their butts or the daze of medication really makes you give up hope sometimes I think. I really cant ever thank you enough for always believing in me and always being so positive it really is a huge deal to me! 🙂

            1. I may be kind, but you have EARNED these comments. I think you would be fantastic conveying real solutions to people because you have stood in their shoes. This adds enormous credibility. You have lived the emotional roller coaster and successfully gotten off. This creates a level of understanding and (nearly) instant trust between you and those currently lost. With all my education, experience and honest desire to help, I will always lack the common bond that you will be able to share.
Now that you’re off the roller coaster, feel free to jump on board the train. There is plenty of room for those willing to help improve the quality of life for those seeking change.

Oh my goodness! you have gotten me to think about it even more now just by putting it that way to me! Imagine if I could help a person with fibro understand it is not there fault and no matter what got them to where they are today it does mean they have to stay there! And also helping them with what questions maybe to ask their doctors or even if its just to help them not feel so lost or scared..you have made my heart so happie Jonathan! Thank you!

    1. Thank you for your kind comment. It will be interesting to hear what your friends think of this article.
In my nearly 21 years in practice, I missed 4 days to illness. I do not say this to get a pat on the back; I say this to reinforce the concept that ACTIVE PARTICIPATION in healthy LIVING (usually) improves the chances of healthy outcomes.

  7. Very good points–as usual! I’ve known people who were very germ phobic who were CONSTANTLY washing their hands and trying all kinds of health fads–only to be sicker than anyone else.

I think it’s important to practice reasonable health precautions like washing hands before eating or after being in the bathroom, but I also think it’s important to build up some resistance.

    1. I agree with you. Using good common sense hygiene certainly plays a role in healthy outcomes, but is only one component. People truly believe mere exposure to germs “makes them sick.” If this was the case nearly EVERY gym member would be chronically sick. Gyms are breeding grounds for “germs,” yet are never accused of causing common illnesses.

Compromised immune systems play the largest factor determining one’s sub par health status. Lifestyle, therefore becomes the #1 factor determining one’s quality of health.

        1. The good news is your brain is aware of these TRUTHS. Now you simply have to convince your MOUTH to listen to your brain! 🙂

One of the best methods I know to eat comfort foods without guilt is to ONLY eat them when you can PLAN THEM AHEAD OF TIME. You can’t “give in” because something “smells good” or “looks good.” CONTROL requires YOU TO DICTATE the TERMS! If there are foods you like, PLAN FOR THEM. This avoids deprivation as well as “shame.” As you gain control of your ACTIONS, practice makes this PROCESS much easier to follow.
