DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE “FOOD PYRAMID” UNDERWENT BEFORE ITS 1992 RELEASE?

If learning about healthy choices and meal combinations isn’t difficult enough, how about adding political agendas to the confusion and see where the results take us!

Back in the early ‘80s, Luise Light was the leader of a group of top-level nutritionists with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)  who developed the eating guide that became known as the Food Guide Pyramid. What people don’t realize is HER submitted proposal DID NOT look like the final version that was revealed to the public in 1992. The submitted proposal looked like the following:

index

  • Fruits (2-4 Servings) Vegetables (3-5 Servings)

  • Protein Foods (6-8 oz.)

  • Whole Grains (3-4 servings)

  • Calcium Foods (2-3 servings)

  • Fats (2-3 tbps)

  • Water (6-8 glasses)

Luise Light quoted,

“Carefully reviewing the research on nutrient recommendations, disease prevention, documented dietary shortfalls and major health problems of the population, we submitted the final version of our new Food Guide to the Secretary of Agriculture.”

Why did the agriculture department send it back to Luise and her team with drastic modifications? Did they believe the scientific evidence she based her conclusions on were flawed? Did they provide different scientific evidence justifying their modifications? Again, Luise Light quotes,

“As I later discovered, the wholesale changes made to the guide by the Office of the Secretary of Agriculture were calculated to win the acceptance of the food industry. For instance, the Ag Secretary’s office altered wording to emphasize processed foods over fresh and whole foods, to downplay lean meats and low-fat dairy choices because the meat and milk lobbies believed it’d hurt sales of full-fat products; it also hugely increased the servings of wheat and other grains to make the wheat growers happy. The meat lobby got the final word on the color of the saturated fat/cholesterol guideline which was changed from red to purple because meat producers worried that using red to signify “bad” fat would be linked to red meat in consumers’ minds.”

So what changes were recommended by the Office of the Secretary of Agriculture?

“Where we, the USDA nutritionists, called for a base of 5-9 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables a day, it was replaced with a paltry 2-3 servings (changed to 5-7 servings a couple of years later because an anti-cancer campaign by another government agency, the National Cancer Institute, forced the USDA to adopt the higher standard). Our recommendation of 3-4 daily servings of whole-grain breads and cereals was changed to a whopping 6-11 servings forming the base of the Food Pyramid as a concession to the processed wheat and corn industries. Moreover, my nutritionist group had placed baked goods made with white flour — including crackers, sweets and other low-nutrient foods laden with sugars and fats — at the peak of the pyramid, recommending that they be eaten sparingly. To our alarm, in the “revised” Food Guide, they were now made part of the Pyramid’s base. And, in yet one more assault on dietary logic, changes were made to the wording of the dietary guidelines from “eat less” to “avoid too much,” giving a nod to the processed-food industry interests by not limiting highly profitable “fun foods” (junk foods by any other name) that might affect the bottom line of food companies.”

The final version produced the following graph:

page30

Luise light stated:

“I vehemently protested that the changes, if followed, could lead to an epidemic of obesity and diabetes — and couldn’t be justified on either health or nutritional grounds.

Her predictions have come to fruition.

“It’s evident that the government can’t be relied on to provide objective, health-promoting food and nutrition advice. In the 25 years since the initial Food Guide was developed, we face an unprecedented nutrition crisis. A majority of Americans have poor-quality diets and the rates of diet-related chronic diseases, from cancer, diabetes and heart disease to digestive diseases and arthritis, are soaring. The latest research blames commercial food ingredients, imbalanced diets, excessive calories and too few nutrient and antioxidant rich vegetables, fruits and whole grains.”

The consumer must be willing to face the truth that the health and welfare of our nation is NOT the PRIMARY focus of our government. Big business and Big Industry (including the health industry) focus primarily on the responsibility of the HEALTH and WELFARE of their ORGANIZATIONS and are willing to sacrifice the welfare OF THE INDIVIDUAL CONSUMER if it interferes with their financial objectives.

Although the following 2 graphs are satirical in nature, the underlying TRUTHFUL messages should not pass unnoticed.

IT ALL COMES DOWN TO A SIMPLE QUESTION:

HAVE YOU EVER HEARD ANYONE SUGGEST EATING  REAL (UNPROCESSED) FOODS (PRIMARILY) ARE BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH?

If not, what GOOD reason/excuse do you have for not making this type of food your PRIMARY source of nutrition?

…and don’t say COST!…

.

THE COST OF YOUR LIFE IS GREATER THAN THE COST OF YOUR WALLET.

  1. Very interesting. I’m actually reading a book right now about big agribusiness–which leads to all of this misleading information.

    1. Big business relies on the consumer’s lack of awareness and lack of motivation to improve their quality of health. An educated consumer threatens the current business model. In reality, a win-win scenario could be achieved if the consumer focused on living a healthy lifestyle. This would force Big Business to modify their approach to maintain market shares. Upon successfully achieving these modifications, the Consumer AND Big Business would benefit.

      1. That is true. It may help reduce or eliminate all the “middlemen” as well.

  2. Great article! I’ve always suspected that to be the reason behind the food pyramid but it’s interesting to here her side of it.

    1. It’s “business common sense” that the consumer is rarely made aware of. Some like to call it “conspiracy.” It’s not! It’s the way Big businesses and industries maintain control over the markets. The good news is, the consumer can remove this power by making personal educated choices that improve their quality of health and LIFE. If more people were willing to choose this path, Big Business would be forced to modify their approach to satisfy the consumer’s demands while improving their bottom line. This would result in a win-win scenario, but it takes an educated motivated consumer to achieve this goal.

    1. Our country is based on competition and gaining market shares. This is the way we do business. Ethically and morally it may be questionable, however, this is the business model we exist in. Understanding this reality should help each of us recognize just how important it is to learn and PRACTICE what it takes to maintain OUR OWN HEALTH. We have a tendency to believe our health “takes care of itself.” We also FALSELY believe if SYMPTOMS don’t exist, we are healthy. These beliefs have contributed to the rise in obesity, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, etc…
      MORAL OF THE STORY:
Don’t be scared; LEARN HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF!

  5. Enjoyable and interesting! As part of our curriculum I teach children about the food pyramid. Looks like I will have to tell them about the original version too. Thanks!

    1. Please do not teach the 1992 version. These categories have been proven to contribute to obesity, diabetes, cardiac disease, etc… A better healthier version can be found at the following link: http://drhyman.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/image2.png This is the latest information that offers a REALISTIC approach to healthier eating. The BALANCE and TYPES of foods provides the FUEL and INFORMATION the body needs. If you ever have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. Have a wonderful weekend.

  6. Wow now that is crazy! So sad this is how it all works out. Instead of educating we are looking out for money and sales.

    1. The reason I share these posts is to teach the consumer the importance of SELF RELIANCE when it comes to their health. Believing the “SYSTEM” has our best interests at heart can ultimately be life threatening. Learning how to be more responsible with our own lives is a MUST!

  7. Wow, I always knew so called government scientific research is heavily politicized but I had no idea how much that influence the food pyramid. I never knew about the back story on the 1992 revision either. Don’t know whether to laugh or cry….

Thanks again for an informative and call to action post!

  8. Love this up close and personal look….as I aged I realized that everything, and I mean everything in life that is put in front of us….not our persona choice parse…comes down to the bottom dollar and how much it is going to make the person responsible for that choice….right down to your Church you attend….they ask you tithe a percentage of your income, not give what you can to make sure you have food on the table and bills paid…..it doesn’t seem to matter what area in life….the bottom dollar is running the show…..healthy, the good for the mankind rarely makes a difference……that’s why I love that you are putting out the good word on eating clean…use our own knowledge and common sense over what the “supposedly experts” are tryin to get us to believe….kat

    1. People simply need to understand the “experts” have “stake in the game” often making their recommendations biased. My information is both unsolicited and receives ZERO compensation. I do this to help people see my motives are honest. It is difficult to establish trust in today’s world. People have the right to disagree with my thoughts on these subjects, but no one has ever questioned my ethics. People understand I live my life by these principles and the lifestyle I suggest to others.

    1. I appreciate your comment. More and more people are beginning to listen to these concerns. It is important they are stated in a respectful manner to maintain credibility. Otherwise, people assume the writer is an ADVOCATE with an underlying agenda.

    1. People sometimes forget that health (to a large extent) is a FOR PROFIT business. This removes some of the credibility when individuals and companies have “skin in the game.”

  12. Question do you really get enough calcium from dairy or is better to get them from leafy greens, broccoli etc??

    Liked by 2 people

    1. I believe in using all categories for nutritional needs. When it comes to dairy, there are certain factors to consider (namely, where it comes from.) My personal dairy is limited to things like, organic greek yogurt, organic cottage cheese and whey powder. Organic butter is ok, but I’d rather see people substitute ghee (a non dairy product.)
Between a good healthy high vegetable diet and a good quality whole food vitamin, the consumer should be able to get all the calcium needed. Dairy is NOT essential to meet the required calcium needs for people. Leafy greens, bok choy, fortified tofu, okra, broccoli, green beans and almonds are a few good sources of calcium if people are lacking this mineral in their diet.

      1. Thank you!! I will also go back to buying ghee again.

One more question….is there a multivitamin brand you recommend? I currently use Garden of Life Raw Women’s and it’s pretty good.
It’s hard to find one that uses the best bioavailable forms for each vitamin and mineral.

        1. Garden of Life makes a quality whole food vitamin. I take New Chapter which falls in the same category as the one you take. These vitamins can be hard to find.

The network of food industry, food regulation and consumer awareness is so complex that it becomes overwhelmingly frustrating the more you learn about it. I am currently reading a book ‘The Omnivore’s Dilemma’ by Michael Pollan; the book is very interesting and resourceful. I recommend others to read it too, mainly if you are interested in learning about food on your plate.
