PRESCRIBING NUTRITION AND EXERCISE!

“In the womb and in early infancy, several risk factors can influence susceptibility to the development of diet-related chronic diseases later in life.”
During childhood and adolescence, the adoption of habits such as unhealthy diets and low-levels of exercise, has been shown to increase the risk of developing certain chronic diseases. An unhealthy diet contributes to high blood pressure in children causing changes in the body which are associated with the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and obesity. A high calorie intake in childhood is also linked to an increased risk of cancer in later life.
Most chronic diseases are expressed in adulthood. Risk factors that prevail during adulthood have been strongly linked with cardiovascular disease and diabetes including obesity, physical inactivity, high cholesterol level, high blood pressure and alcohol consumption. An individual’s ability to take control over his or her life and to make healthy lifestyle decisions appears to be an important determinant of health.
As the risk of developing disease is generally believed to be reversible at any age there is an absolute benefit for ageing individuals to eat healthily, maintain their weight, and continue to exercise. (Ref: World Health Organization’s Recommendation To Address Chronic Diseases)

“They are the most common causes of death in the world”

and present a great burden for society, particularly diseases such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease , cancer, dental disease, and osteoporosis. Making improvements in terms of diet and physical activity can help reduce the risk of these chronic diseases. (Ref: Diet and Nutrition Prevention of Chronic Diseases)

leading-causes-of-death-smaller

The World Health Organization’s own findings show the most common cause of death in the world comes from preventable and reversible chronic diseases. This article doesn’t mention ANYTHING about the CAUSE OF CHRONIC DISEASE originating from a HUMAN DEFICIENCY in prescription drug use. Nor does it recommend the need for further drug development and wider distribution as a remedy to this world wide cause of death. It does, however, specifically and repeatedly state the prevalence of chronic disease as a self induced condition TREATABLE and CORRECTABLE by, “An individual’s ability to take control over his or her life and to make healthy lifestyle decisions.”

img0If this is the leading cause of death, why aren’t our physicians writing prescriptions for nutrition and exercise? A dentist doesn’t offer prescription drugs because their patient’s refuse to comply with brushing and flossing their teeth. They don’t refer their patients with depression to family physicians for anti-anxiety medication to improve teeth brushing compliance. Why does the medical physician offer prescription drugs IN PLACE OF the PROPER PRESCRIPTION: EXERCISE AND NUTRITION? How will the patient ever be incentivized to take control of their life if their health relies on a doctor prescribing medication for the rest of their lives?

It is no longer acceptable for a doctor to prescribe medication because a patient would rather “pop a pill” than comply with necessary lifestyle changes. Doctors have refused to perform heart bypasses and transplants in patients unwilling to give up smoking. This concept needs to be extended to the family medical practice. Prescription medication should ONLY BE USED after the SAFEST most efficacious treatments have been utilized FIRST without attaining desired results (unless an acute emergency presents itself.)

This means the physician must begin working in collaboration with licensed nutritionists and certified exercise specialists capable of helping their patients overcome obstacles interfering with healthy outcomes. When and if nutrition and exercise is insufficient to achieving healthy results, medical physicians can consult with natural health care providers to see if natural remedies could effectively and SAFELY provide additional support to overcoming any remaining obstacles. If this process does not achieve the desired results, the physician should then turn to their pharmaceutical prescriptions. Even if they are needed, there is a greater chance the amount and potential duration will be reduced limiting the harmful side effects patients commonly experience.

This approach to HEALTH CARE (rather than DISEASE CARE) provides a solution for BOTH patient and medical physician. It provides the patient more comprehensive care intended to address and correct UNDERLYING CAUSES of CHRONIC DISEASE while empowering them with greater CONTROL over their lives. It provides the medical physician the additional resources needed to help their patient achieve a better quality of health.

  2. Exactly the conclusion I came to when my dr told me that I had to be put on cholesterol meds. I did not want those chemicals in my body when I knew it was my own laziness that caused it. I wish more drs would do more to encourage it then just prescribing that supposed “magic pill”.

    1. Doctors get tired of people refusing to do their part believing the prescription alternative offers a similar solution. IT DOESN’T! People believe pharmaceuticals “heal” and “make people healthy.” In reality, they chemically alter the body’s normal function (avoid addressing the Root Problems) and help to maintain CHRONIC DISEASE. This is REALITY. Lifestyle changes aren’t magical solutions; they provide the body what it needs to function optimally. It requires work and commitment, but the payoff is absolutely worth it!

Truly this might be my most favorite post of yours!! I am sure if had suffered depression which usually occurs with fibromyalgia and ptsd I do not think I would have had the thought process to take control of my life and make all of the changes that I have made to become the best possible verison of me! it worries me for the people that have fallen into depression or a medicated state of it even and they might never find out that their doctor should be telling them exact ways to change their bad habits into good and guide the patient without making them feel they are to blame for their condition. Instead giving them the helping hand they need which starts with eating better and exercise! So simple your cure is not at the bottom of a bottle of pills…in fact, there is every chance the pills could be making you worse! Thank you for another great post Jonathan! 🙂

    1. You have taken the leap and been rewarded by the results. You have participated in treating disease from the pharmaceutical side and the natural side and have experienced the effectiveness of natural health approach. This approach “feeds” the body essentials that help it function optimally. It provides NEEDS rather than chemically altering function and “FORCING” desired results. Congratulations on achieving BALANCE in your life and a new healthy and happy outlook. Your experience with healthy living opens the door of opportunities few ever get to see.

  7. I am all for this! And as I regularly mention, these sort of prescriptions can even be fun and pleasant – eating better food, getting outside for a walk or hanging out with a friend to play a game of tennis or shoot hoops. It is win-win!

    1. Absolutely. The difficult part is convincing the public this is a win-win solution.

  8. Very moving and compelling. Taking the time to exercise and eat healthy is a choice. We can say our busy lifestyle is the reason we do not have time to exercise but once our body fails us we will have nothing but time. I understand there are instances where our body fails us through no fault of our own and that is a different story. When we can change the outcome of our health, we should seek to do it.

    1. This entails not taking health for granted! Avoiding the essential needs of the body will catch up with people over time. It comes down to basic ATTITUDE. We call children who avoid responsibilities they don’t enjoy (like school work and chores) LAZY and SPOILED. What do we call adults who mimick this behavior? Over time we call them SICK, DISEASED and DYSFUNCTIONAL.

In a world where the general consensus seems to be that prescription drugs are the one and only answer to our ailments, this post will hopefully help to disprove that. I’ve seen/heard numerous success stories about individuals having literally dozens of prescriptions to take each day, that, by changing to a healthier diet and just moving more were able to get off all of their prescriptions.

Hippocrates said it best with his famous quote, “Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food.” Enjoy the article, hope you can take away a newfound approach to health/fitness and put it to practice for your entire family.

    1. I promise you the numbers of doctors using this approach to HEALTH are growing. It’s a slow process because there’s great resistance to change. As more and more people see the real benefits and share the REAL stories, the concept of what it takes to experience REAL HEALTH will grow.

  14. Sadly, doctors are not paid for prevention… they are paid for curing sickness. Sad 😦

    Liked by 1 person

    1. They are not even paid for “curing” sickness. Doctors are paid to maintain chronic diseases. They are paid to MAINTAIN diabetes, thyroid imbalances high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cardiac disease, etc… These are NOT conditions they “cure.” Commonly increased dosages as well as additional prescriptions are required to (at best) achieve stable blood panels. This is NOT the same thing as CURING DISEASE. The pharmaceutical model has NEVER attempted to “FIX” these chronic conditions and restore a natural state of health where the body can control and maintain healthy function. FUNCTIONAL health care doctors are working on discovering ROOT CAUSES to CORRECT underlying imbalances to help RESTORE functional health rather than treat ongoing SYMPTOMS.

Prescription drugs are not always the answer, the patients always should make a lifestyle change as well. Well said!

    1. Prescription drugs (by themselves) are rarely the answer. Until the consumer is willing to accept responsibility for their health, they will remain “prisoners” within their own bodies.

  17. As mentioned in the above comments, lifestyle changes are the key. A lot of people of today are quite un educated about how important health and fitness is. One aspect, our diet in particular, is so so important, we are surrounded by processed foods and people are totally unaware of the impacts of it (e.g. added sugars), yet it can be a quick fix/hunger tamer. especially amongst the busy lifestyles of today.
I work in pharmacy, and boy do I see customers that have a bulk number of prescriptions that and commonly they cost over $100, and they get them on the regular!

People certainly do look for a quick fix (i guess sometimes you need too), but with a bit of dedication and focus set aside to changing lifestyle habits and choices, every individual could be on a healthier path, and sustain themselves from such illnesses.

    1. At best (in most cases) these prescription medications only address a part of the problem. They provide an opportunity to temporarily stabilize the body so that LIFESTYLE CHANGES can be implemented to CORRECT and RESTORE HEALTH to the body. Most traditional doctors do not emphasize this IMPORTANT FACT. The consumer is left (falsely believing) the medication is “making them healthy.” Most medications that address chronic conditions are not meant to “create good health.” They are intended to stabilize chronic ill health. Stabilizing chronic ill health IS NOT THE SAME as creating or restoring good health. Until the public is educated about this, they will continue to falsely believe that prescriptive medications are an acceptable ALTERNATIVE to a HEALTHY LIFESTYLE and (unfortunately) pay the health consequences

    1. As I commented on your site, you are going to find this approach significantly more rewarding. There is plenty of frustration since patient compliance continues to be a major factor in patient outcomes. Knowing the approach pursues HEALTH rather than defining success on lab panel values humanizes the interaction. Patients (in general) really appreciate the time and effort functional practitioners apply.
