ATTITUDE

Positive-or-Negative smaller

Attitude is an interesting word that has a profound impact on our emotional well being. It can work in our favor or impede our ability to grow and develop. Surprisingly, many people with “good” attitudes often possess an over abundance. Conversely, many people with “bad” attitudes suffer from such significant positive emotion deficit, their attitudes create great self harm.

GOOD ATTITUDES:

When it comes to good health, those with GOOD ATTITUDES do what is necessary to achieve the quality of life they choose. They do not place stipulations and terms to achieve their goals. They recognize that life has pleasurable and less than pleasurable experiences; both of which need to be completed in order to attain the goal(s). They don’t focus on or complain about life’s “less than pleasurable tasks or experiences.” They realize and accept their situation and pursue it as positively as possible to make the overall experience beneficial. They understand that obstacles will arise, and that solutions can always be found if their ATTITUDE is based on commitment, patience and perseverance.

BAD ATTITUDES:

When it comes to good health, those with BAD ATTITUDES generally choose to do what they LIKE, yet often WANT and feel entitled to the same QUALITY OF LIFE as the person CHOOSING a GOOD ATTITUDE. They dictate the rules when it comes to following a path needed to achieve their goals. If they don’t like aspects within the action plan, they make excuses and circumvent these aspects in favor of “feel good,” “fun” and enjoyable parts without regard to the fact their objective will likely FAIL. Without the discipline and willingness to include the NECESSARY, but laborious tasks (often dreaded,) those with bad attitudes rarely accept personal responsibility for not succeeding. They tend to point fingers everywhere EXCEPT at themselves. They pursue their mission from a defensive posture more interested in identifying obstacles than seeking solutions. They tend to give up quickly adding additional instances of FAILURE to their “resume” as proof they tried. They claim circumstances in life, once again, interfered with their (less than committed) attempts.

These last two paragraphs provide insight into two types of attitudes nearly every person has the ability to choose between. If we apply these two attitudes to GOOD HEALTH, it appears more people have chosen to accept a BAD ATTITUDE than GOOD ATTITUDE. Rather than using statistical data to validate this conclusion, I choose to use OBSERVATION and REALITY instead.

  1. Are more people following the guidelines KNOWN for increasing the chances of healthier living, or are they making excuses for lifestyles KNOWN for causing emotional and physical damage?

  2. Are more people thinking about LONG TERM NEEDS and FUNCTIONAL BENEFITS or thinking about SHORT TERM WANTS and IMMEDIATE GRATIFICATION?

  3. Are more people HAPPY, FULFILLED and THANKFUL for the opportunities that exist EVERY DAY or DEPRESSED, DISENCHANTED and OVERWHELMED claiming victory if they simply survive another day?

  4. Are more people willing to view obstacles as MOTIVATING challenges that lead to greater self confidence or additional IMPEDIMENTS creating additional excuses for failure?

Answering these four questions provides insight into our ATTITUDES and how our minds process  life’s situations.

For change to occur, a person must first become AWARE of their situation. So many people have followed a destructive path for so long, they have lost sensitivity and objectivity to the lives they live. This post gives EVERYONE a chance to sit back, introspect and determine for themselves which ATTITUDE best reflects their current place in life. If a BAD ATTITUDE prevails, (and change is wanted,) it is essential to begin finding POSITIVES in situations that were only perceived NEGATIVELY. It becomes important to keep a DAILY journal and write down “things” to be thankful for. In this journal, SMALL ACTION STEPS (easily achievable) need to be included for the individual to implement EACH DAY. These action steps help reinforce positive feelings through accomplishment; an important emotion experienced in those with  GOOD ATTITUDES.

It is important to remember we are “creatures of habit.” Reinforcing this “GOOD ATTITUDE” through repetition will not only help improve an individual’s health and quality of life, but will also help achieve a greater sense of SELF PURPOSE!

IS YOUR ATTITUDE WHERE IT NEEDS TO BE?

IF NOT, DO YOU VALUE YOUR LIFE ENOUGH TO CHANGE IT?

  1. Unfortunately we often don’t see the need for change until it’s so late in life we give up on achieving.

    1. As far as I’m concerned, change is achievable (albeit tortuously difficult in some cases) until the last breath in life.
We may not see the need because we often lose our focus and control over our lives. Early in the process we are usually aware, but may not have the experience to know what steps to take to redirect our lives in order to achieve the desired results.

      1. Agreed – which is why I was careful to say “so late in life” and not “too late in life” 🙂
One of the biggest hurdles I had starting in was realizing that even after my age, after the heart attack and all, I could still make the changes necessary to better my quality of life.
An unexpected joy is I can still enjoy my diet, my “exercise” regimen, if I will just investigate my options.

        1. Well, keep at it man!! 🙂 That is the Attitude that leads to drive and commitment and ultimately leads to CHANGE. People often strive for perfection; I believe “BETTER” is a darn good direction to be headed.

  2. About 2 weeks ago I began keeping a gratitude journal. I felt thet need to switch my perspective from despair to hope once again. Chronic pain is hard to deal with, but there were things I could do to help myself and I wasn’t doing them. As I started recording tiny goals for myself at the beginning of each day, goal setting became one third of my journal page. The other two thirds were divided into sections I labeled “Goals” and “Hope”. What was I hoping to accomplish this day? What was my emotional target for the next 18 hrs going to look like? At the end of the day, I recorded what was I thankful for on that particular day, putting a plus mark next to the goals I achieved. This little exercise has worked wonders at boosting my personal attitude. I sought out a practitioner, finally! Two sessions down, I have slept better in the last two nights than in many years. Yay!

If nothing changes, nothing changes, and that’s just plain depressing! No more of that for me!!!

    1. You are a living testament proving that positive changes in attitude, health and life are possible with the proper mindset and guidance. It doesn’t mean every day will be better than the preceding one; it means that reflecting over a lifetime will bring joy, happiness and an appreciation for the gift of life.

      1. I have you to thank for guiding me to a better understanding of balance and what that looks like, or can look like, in my life. I’m better off because of your writing on this concept. New Doc was seen 3 x this week and I can tell the difference in my mood, as my physical pain has diminished. It’s weird how connected the two things can be.

        1. Thank you for your very kind words. They are greatly appreciated.

I am very excited for you that you have found a doctor able to work with you and understand the BIG PICTURE and address your concerns from this perspective.

  3. Love it! You are singing my song. That being said, I believe that it is possible to cultivate a positive attitude with only a little bit of daily discipline. Very nice!

    1. I certainly understand your sentiment. Since I like to offer a conservative approach, I would encourage greater discipline (initially) because it is easier to reduce a regimented structure than increase it in a situation where a person is already struggling.

With each of us aware of the importance of compassion and understanding, I’m certain each of our personalities would be able to help patients achieve the results THEY desire.

  4. It all starts within, doesn’t it?

I don’t know if there are statistics to back this up, but the most negative people I have known in life have been the same people to experience the worst diseases later in life and vice versa. Negativity, in a sense, is its own disease.

    1. Even our terminology reinforces the concept that it all starts within. “Gut instinct,” Gut feeling” are two examples.

Emotions dramatically impact our health. It is not a coincidence that negativity commonly acts as a precursor to disease and dysfunction.

  5. One of the things I really love about your posts and articles Doc is the fact that you talk about how everything is connected, integrated, related. So many “physical” doctors don’t even ask questions about whats going on in your life? How are things at home? How are the kids? They don’t even try to get a sense or grasp of how the mental and attitudinal part of their patients life is. You connect it all and you are so right. The mental approach is every bit as important as the foods we eat, the exercise we do, and so on.

Thanks again for your great energy and approach and amazing output!

    1. I agree! If you’re a mom to toddlers (say, three of them), that has a lot to do with why you aren’t sleeping at night, or why your anxiety levels are high, or why your hope in tomorrow is low, but general practitioners never ask about that stuff, or recommend exercise to help build stamina, sleep better, or give one an overall sense of rightness. They just prescribe an anti-anxiety pill, turning their patients into addicts, whether they mean to or not. 😦

    2. I am touched by your kind words and sentiments. Nearly 21 years in practice and the willingness to LEARN throughout helped me develop a broader and better understanding of many of the problems we face today. If doctors were more willing to LISTEN to their patients than ASSUME their diagnosis provided all the answers better working relationships and solutions would be experienced. I hope these messages I share improves this understanding for both patient and doctor.

  7. I am particularly stricken in this post with the idea of entitlement to a good attitude/quality of life on the part of those with a bad attitude. It’s not something I thought about before, but now that I see it written, it seems obvious. Like anything, the good attitude can become a habit, but I think to get there, most people have to the work first. It is like almost everything in life – it doesn’t just happen, you have to work for it!

    1. Spot on! We have lost a great deal of understanding when it comes to the work ethic and replaced it with the need for instant gratification. As we become more aware of this fact and are WILLING to accept a new reality involving patience, a stronger work ethic and GRADUAL results a GOOD ATTITUDE becomes possible.

  8. I’m going to start a journal where I write accomplishments. I find I rarely take the time to feel them or notice them at all. In fact, I wrote a post about this recently because I was thinking about it. And keeping a journal is a great idea. Thank you for bringing it to my mind. 🙂

Although it’s not easy to be positive and optimistic in every situation, I really put forth ,effort daily to do so. I see the difference in my life and my families life as a result.
