This is an approximation of the number of approved chemicals authorized for use and distribution throughout the world. Can you guess how many of the tested chemicals were determined unsafe for human exposure by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA?)
9
.
5 of these chemicals were banned prior to the Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) of 1976. 4 more were banned in 1984. The agency hasn’t banned another chemical under the TSCA in over three decades.
HAVE I GOT YOUR ATTENTION?
In the “Fourth National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals,” the CDC reported that the average person in the United States has at least 212 chemicals in their blood and urine. [Centers for Disease Control. National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals. CDC.]
These chemicals have been found in NEWBORNS crossing the “protective placenta” and circulating throughout the developing fetus. The following paragraph was taken from a publication by the Environmental Working Group (July 14, 2005)
Body Burden: The Pollution in Newborns
“Of the 287 chemicals we detected in umbilical cord blood, we know that 180 cause cancer in humans or animals, 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system, and 208 cause birth defects or abnormal development in animal tests. The dangers of pre- or post-natal exposure to this complex mixture of carcinogens, developmental toxins and neurotoxins have never been studied.”
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU WERE EXPOSED TO THESE STATISTICS? (MAYBE NEVER!)
Approximately 1000-2500 new chemical applications are filed with the EPA for approval on an annual basis. The bureaucratic process and guidelines impede the EPA from performing thorough evaluations.
“Because it receives virtually no data from industry, EPA relies on estimates of key parameters to judge if the chemical might be toxic to humans, for the vast majority of new chemicals.”
.
THE COMMON SENSE PERSPECTIVE
Many argue the quantities of innocuous and toxic chemicals is so trivial, safety levels established by the “authoritarian community” remain within safety limits. I have some questions for these professionals.
-
How can anyone test for safe levels when hundreds of chemicals are circulating throughout the body AT THE SAME TIME? Independently the chemicals may be deemed safe; what are the SYNERGISTIC EFFECTS?
-
Can we rely on the term “safe levels of chemicals.” Hyper-sensitivity must be accepted as a reality that poses serious dangers for many children and adults. If ONE PEANUT can cause a person to suffer an anaphylactic crisis, why should the consumer believe exposure to small amounts of chemicals couldn’t result in a similar hypersensitivity reaction resulting in a similar crisis?
-
Cancer, Asthma, and Autism are just three examples of health maladies that have grown substantially as we witness a potential correlation with the growing exposure to environmental and food chemicals. Measuring cause and effect is nearly impossible with the number of variables, however, assuming chemicals play NO ROLE in the toxic outcomes and diseases we see on a regular basis is likely naive.
Most of us assume we are free of these chemical toxicities because they produce no symptoms interfering with the quality of our lives. Whether you agree or disagree with their “dangers,” chemicals are another substance the body must store if it is unable to metabolize them. Reducing exposure to these sources of chemicals simply makes GOOD COMMON SENSE. Conversely, I never heard anyone suggest that better health is achieved by increasing chemical exposure and consumption.
WHAT STEPS CAN YOU TAKE?
-
Use natural cleaning products in the house and at work
-
Use natural cosmetics
-
Eat foods that have not been exposed to pesticides and do not contain chemical additives.
-
Drink filtered water
Every step taken to provide your body a safer, healthier environment reduces the risk for common diseases.
Is this what our future FARMERS will look like in the fields they farm?
DO YOU THINK IT MIGHT BE TIME TO REDUCE YOUR EXPOSURE TO THESE CHEMICALS AND THEIR POTENTIAL LIFE ALTERING EFFECTS?
Excellent and alarming post! I also wonder how many of these toxins build up in our bodies over time. This was also a great reminder to check the cleaners that I use around the house. I always think of food when I think of organic, but there are so many other ways that toxins can touch us.
Informative, as always!

Those we can’t metabolize remain in our bodies (typically if fat storage cells.) The cumulative effects are UNKNOWN. This is one reason SUPERVISED detoxification by a licensed credible physician can change the health status of an individual suffering from a range of imbalances from obesity to cancer.
Our liver and kidneys are our natural filtering systems. We can’t “change them out” as we change out our oil and air filters in our vehicles. Detoxification is a viable method to help improve quality and function of these vital organs.

The “unknown” in that is concerning.

What a great response! Sometimes the simplest of thinking and actions produces the healthiest results. There is certainly a place for technology, but not at the cost of human suffering!

Dr.J., an alarming post! Even though we know about toxic chemicals, reading it in detail is frightening! I’ve gone organic in many products, however one can never be sure there aren’t hidden toxins lurking! 🌅 Elizabeth

My goal is really to create awareness much more so than fear. We have so much more control of our lives than most are willing to accept. I hope these articles shed new light to inspire people to recognize self value and worth and begin accepting responsibility to improve the quality of their lives. It’s nice to see you understand the value in organic products. Slowly, people will begin to accept new lifestyle patterns that will transform their lives into amazing realities.

Very shocking and horrible! So crazy that we are exposed to so many toxins! Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

I agree with you that it IS SHOCKING, but how many people do you think will alter their habits to minimize future exposure and life altering outcomes? I hope the readers don’t simply read the story and think it’s interesting while following their daily rituals and ignoring the potentially damaging results.

Over 2k chemical applications a year. That is more than ridiculous when you think about it. I took a statistics for science course in university (when I was a bio major before switching to business) and I found the information so fascinating. Its amazing what you can do with stats when you manipulate your sample size and controls. We are always told that at ‘safe levels’ these chemicals will not do us any harm. I wonder if these researchers will ever publish the synergistic effects of all these chemical living in our bodies. Is it even something they can measure? Its pretty crazy.
LikeLiked by 1 person
They will NEVER be able to measure the synergistic effects because the variables differ from person to person. The safest exposure and usage is called AVOIDANCE (in most cases.)

Bloody hell this is scary.
Nothing else to add really.

Maybe it will act as a wake up call to those who take chemicals for granted.

We live on land adjacent to a farm, so all the run off moves over us as it travels down hill. The property we are on, and that above us, hasn’t been used for farming purposes in a long time, but what was sprayed on those fields in the past? Who knows! We double filter our water and use an ultraviolet lighting system to kill additional bacteria, but heavy metals? I don’t know. We do the best we can with what we have.

What right does any industry have to make each of us say, “we do the best we can with what we have?” No one has the right to adversely affect the quality of life of another person for their own financial benefit. Yet this is exactly what we have grown to accept. Each person feels so powerless, yet we have more strength (based on our actions) than most realize. If we buy pesticide sprayed GMO crops, they will continue producing them; if we choose healthier options, they will start producing them instead. They make what we buy!

Frightening !!! We have to take responsibility and do our best to go as clean as possible !!!

I’d like to add an additional responsibility. We need to help others learn what eating clean means and help them implement these better options. If each of us can “pay this forward” we can grow a healthier nation.

omg. How can any agency possibly know any of those levels are safe? Even if they were (doubtful) the sheer volume of toxins is mind-blowing. Being aware = making better choices. Thank you for a big heads-up!

Most people aren’t aware and need to be exposed to the potential dangers they face. If they choose to ignore the issue, they might face a rude awakening.

I’m particularly interested in the synergistic effects – that’s something that I think gets far too little attention, either on this subject, or with regard to the various drugs people get.

Absolutely. Don’t you wonder how doctors pledge the Hippocratic Oath (which mandates no harm to the patient) yet prescribe multiple medications without knowing the synergistic effects.

Now that is really something to think about. Thanks for the info. Kind of scary at that.

I am working on mine. I just need to cut out the treats. I do eat healthier, but still can’t cut down on the treats. I wanted ice cream last night so I got it, but my dinner was much healthier. I also eat during the day now that I am up earlier and need to eat. My blood sugar is still very high and scary. Dr apt on the 20th. I hope he is prepared to help me or off to find an endocrinologist. I am so bad now, not sure how much can be erased by meds or if at all. I would hate insulin, but I might have let him push me off too long and not helping myself. I think my insurance offers nutrition classes.

It sounds like you are working on achieving balance which could dramatically affect your blood sugar levels. Turn to you son for help if you feel he is qualified to help you. In addition, turn to your chiropractor for guidance and support. These are two good starting points.

My son is newly certified and working on changing his diet to all healthy, but he is willing to try things I’m not. I can’t bring myself to eat them. I had to eat foods in the hospital I didn’t care for or no eating. Changes your perspective when you could starve due to food choices and aversions.

The object is not to base a diet plan on foods we hate. It should incorporate these foods AND foods we enjoy. Getting over the palatable dilemma can be challenging, but it certainly beats injecting insulin into our bodies on a daily basis.

You got a point about the insulin. The hospital injected me 2 times a day it was so high. He refuses to become like me. I can’t eat most of what he eats. Even the smell turns me off. I had an omelette with meat and cheese this morning and some homefries. Just some, not all and no toast.

It’s terrifying how many chemicals we are exposed to (and ingest) on a daily basis, whether knowingly or not.

This is why I write these articles. Knowing the reality provides options for each of us. Those choosing a healthier path need to utilize ALL information accessible; those choosing to ignore this reality allow fate to choose their outcome.

Another frightening post. You shocked me with the statistics about the chemicals found in the umbilical cord. Our failed government allows people to poison themselves and our unborn children. On a side note, I purchased a water filter last week.

Based on the responses people really are surprised to find out about these chemicals. If people are truly interested in being healthy, it starts by not sabotaging oneself. Mother’s would be angered to realize their bodies contain so many chemicals past on to their children without recourse. Yet 1000-2500 new chemicals are applied for each year to grow this toxic problem.
I use a water filtering system as well. I think they are very important.

As a doctor lacking creative skills, I appreciate your compliment. I spent a week trying to create it to look and behave (interact) a certain way with the reader. After failing miserably, I contacted a person I knew with computer skills. Approximately 2 hours later, it was up and running. I consider myself a qualified physician; my computer skills I place comparable to a second grader! 🙂
