…BUT, DR. OZ BELIEVES IN IT…

Pure Natural Forskolin : Best way to Lose 17lbs in a month.

Now that sales of Green Coffee Bean Extract and Garcinia Cambogia  (the previous “miracle” natural weight loss supplements) have slowed down, Dr. Oz has once again jumped on the “bandwagon” promoting the miracle weight loss product, FORSKOLIN. That’s right. Dr. Oz demonstrates the miracle fat burning effects of this supplement by torching paper (representing body fat in a video) that spares muscle while burning fat away. The active ingredients in Forskolin (Coleus Forskohlii root extract) has been shown (in rats) to increase the levels of an enzyme called  lipase – utilized by the body to burn fat. Forskolin also stimulates the production of cyclic AMP (cAMP), a molecule that triggers the release of a thyroid hormone responsible for metabolic function. The manufacturers of this product as well as Dr. Oz claim it “sends your metabolism into overdrive and produces natural energy that lasts all day.” They quote, “this revolutionary breakthrough is your fat melting solution.”

NO IT ISN’T!

I am not a cardiologist with my own TV show, but I am a physician that has helped many people attain the skills for losing and successfully MAINTAINING body weight and body fat LOSS using practical, realistic and HEALTHY approaches.

Do I believe supplements and herbs can help? YES!

Do I think people should “jump start” weight loss by using supplements, herbs and/or prescriptive medications? NO!

The “quick weight loss approach” simulates the satisfaction attained when eating fast foods and processed sugary desserts. It creates the possibility of a very SHORT PERIOD OF SATISFACTION that usually culminates in recurring failure.

Successful weight loss and weight maintenance is achieved by following a common game plan. It must be customized to the individual, but the outline or foundational approach is similar for nearly everyone.

(1) The BRAIN must be willing and ready to accept lifestyle modifications. The brain, NOT THE STOMACH, is where weight loss begins. Without a true understanding and willingness to commit oneself COMPLETELY to this concept, long term weight loss is UNLIKELY ACHIEVABLE!

(2) Food can no longer be a PRIMARY source of stress reduction. It can no longer be a PRIMARY source of joy and happiness either. There is a difference between enjoying food and “living to eat.” The person who enjoys food (in a healthy manner,) controls their eating; the person who “lives to eat,” is often controlled by their poor food choices. Food must be viewed as INFORMATION as well as NUTRITION supplied to the body that strengthens its ability to function and maintain homeostasis (BALANCE.) Until food is viewed in this manner, poor choices will continue to be a source of cravings that lead to destructive addictions and ultimately disease and death. The only reason these damaging foods exist is the enormous wealth they generate at the expense of the consumer.

(3) Exercise can no longer be viewed as a recreational activity when time permits. Exercise is part of the process the BRAIN must recognize within the definition of lifestyle modifications. It strengthens the heart and lungs, it increases flexibility and strengthens muscle tone reducing injuries and degeneration as we age, it strengthens the immune system, it combats depression, etc… Exercise, therefore, must become a PRIORITY. If the BRAIN cannot commit to this concept, long term weight loss is UNLIKELY ACHIEVABLE!

(4) An approach to STRESS MANAGEMENT must be pro-actively created BEFORE “triggers” in life require its implementation. Rather than stress hormones taking control of us creating havoc and ultimately metabolic issues, avenues must be created to effectively vent stress. By using this HEALTHIER approach to DEAL WITH STRESS, the typically destructive patterns of behaviors are avoided. Some of these healthier approaches may include the use of meditation, yoga, quiet time, music, movies, nature, etc….

These four steps create the basic foundation for LONG TERM weight loss and improved health. Once a person is on this trajectory, adjuncts such as supplements and herbs can be incorporated to enhance (rather than replace) the four components mentioned to maximize the process.

You don’t achieve a healthy body weight and composition with “medicated rubber garments,” or Soap that removes “obesity.”

This process of weight management requires hard work and the realization there is NO END POINT. It is a process EVERYONE MUST FOLLOW; not just those with weight and or health issues. It is an ongoing process that requires self monitoring and adjustments to maintain the objectives. You will notice I didn’t say GOALS. Goals imply end points. With this understanding, The OBJECTIVE to pursue and maintain OPTIMAL HEALTH remains ongoing until the end of our lives. As we practice this approach our new mindset keeps us focused on our new lifestyle rather than our hormonal cravings and past destructive patterns of behavior. Just like anything in life, the more we practice the better we become at gaining control over our lives. This approach produces A REAL LONG TERM SOLUTION. It doesn’t rely on an external source (a supplement, herb or prescriptive drug) to alter and control the function of our bodies. It relies on our self commitment, self value and self awareness for purposeful living and guidance.

The choice is simple. You can listen to a nationally advertised well known cardiologist like Dr. Oz promoting products to “lose weight and change your life,” or an unknown retired chiropractic physician (Dr. Jonathan Colter) using his knowledge, experience and compassion for people to achieve the same meaningful outcome by showing YOU how to take back control of your life.

Which doctor’s advice will you follow to manage your weight and create optimal health?

  1. Although I thought Dr. Oz’ first year on TV was enlightening and helpful to many, the show has since taken an approach I strongly disagree with and have stopped watching him.

    1. As you can tell by my article, I too am not a fan. I wrote this article to demonstrate a realistic approach to health and weight management. From a doctor’s perspective, I believe my profession has a tendency to make health more complicated than it needs to be. There are good solutions to many conditions people develop and sharing these solutions is important. Informed consent can only exist if truthful realities outside and inside traditional care is revealed. I hope to expand the general population’s knowledge through my blog site. Thank you for taking your time to share your comment.

    1. Thank you Leitha. I appreciate you taking your time to read my articles. I’m also very happy you have found another chiropractic physician able to provide the care you deserve. I’m certain Dr. Ballas feels fortunate to have the opportunity to provide your care. You have a very BIG HEART, great intellect and a wonderful personality. You are truly a special lady.

Now, as far as my weight management soap is concerned, I do have 2 bars of obesity soap in stock, but you may want to also consider my latest health care product: FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE TOOTHPASTE! 😀 My catchy slogan reads, “that million dollar smile!”

Wishing you and your family all my love, joy and happiness this Easter weekend.

  5. While I understand recovery from obesity can’t be accomplished thru goal setting alone, I still think one has to start somewhere. Setting a goal gets me going and when I meet that goal I feel good about myself and more confident when looking to the future.

I don’t watch Dr Oz, but I do read yr blog, religiously. YOU make sense!!!

    1. Lori, you bring up an excellent point. Goal setting is a useful approach in life that helps us achieve a sense of accomplishment. It acts as a positive influence to help us stay focused and reinforces growth and development. In my opinion, however, goals are generally expressed in finite terms. Incorporating goals into LONG TERM OBJECTIVES that require ongoing efforts for maximal benefit combines the best of both concepts.
Thank you for pointing this out to me.

  6. I love your cynicism. I did a profile on Dr. Oz (and his buddies) for a media literacy seminar and told everyone that when trained professionals are working for profit, members of the public, who don’t have research higher degrees in science are not going to read through pages and pages of research to debunk myths. What defense is there against these types? How do we know who to ctrl+alt+believe? Most people who say, “this is misleading and dangerous” are called conspiracy theorists.

    1. Great comment! I’m still laughing at your ctrl+alt+believe statement.
I do not consider myself a conspiracy theorist. I consider myself a “common sense” doctor willing and capable of putting a little effort into reading into the details of research before jumping on any bandwagons. I also believe the human component in life is as critical and “real” as any objective scientific study.

In the movie, Patch Adams, Philip Seymour Hoffman grabs Robin Williams (Patch Adams) by the arm and demands he NOT RESIGN from his internship. Hoffman’s character disliked Patch Adams and tried getting him thrown out of med school earlier in the movie. When he grabs Patch Adams, he recognizes a quality and a skill in Patch Adams he himself didn’t possess.Hoffman states, “I will be the best pathologist in our graduating class, but I can’t get Mrs. Jones to eat her hospital food. Without eating it, she will die.” Patch Adams discovers Mrs. Jones’s fantasy to dance in a pool filled with spaghetti. After participating in this dance (with her) she begins to eat her hospital food.

Science would have solved this dilemma by restraining Mrs. Jones and hooking her up to an IV. Patch Adams (understanding the human component and the importance of compassion) solved the problem unconventionally and brought JOY to the patient. We need to understand the importance of science and research, yet recognize its limitations at the same time. Life is more than just existence, it’s just as much about quality and people.

      1. Absolutely. Science has great benefits and huge limitations and the more we care to look, the more power we will have over our decisions.

  7. Dr Oz…One of the many charlatans Oprah has showcased over the years, who can forget the outdoor sauna guy where people died at his cult compound.

    1. Dr. Oz may have lost his focus when discovering the pressure of TV ratings. The concept to teach people to improve the quality of their own lives is commendable. Commercializing the health industry and providing his “blessing” on products poorly tested compromised his integrity. This is a shame.

  8. Thanks so much for sharing and providing clear-cut steps on how to engage in a lifestyle change.

A friend of mine recently posted an article from refinery29 about the Minnesota Starvation Experiment. The article looked at the ways in which the findings could be applied to dieting. It was a stark reminder of why blogs like yours rather than a diet industry are so desperately needed.

    1. Thank you for sharing your feelings with all of us. I have learned life’s transitions move at a pace I typically travel (the speed of a Tortoise!) I have also learned that that’s ok. It’s not about the speed, but rather the direction. Moving forward, growing as a person along the journey, makes the adventure worth traveling.

Thank you for sharing the article about the Minnesota Starvation Experiment. This was important information attained during WWII. Although various conclusions reached during the study have been argued against, this study remains one of the most important starvation studies to date.

  9. It would be nice to have a $ for every time somebody who should know better just assumed that what delivers an encouraging chemical test result for a lab rat will also deliver a lasting clinical benefit for a person.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Ah, but don’t you realize in the minds of many researchers and developers the human and the rat share a similar role. Are we not substituted in place of the rat when we are provided genetically modified foods to consume? Are we not substituted in place of the rat when it is determined a new pharmaceutical drug unsafe? Are we not substituted in place of the rat when we consume agricultural products contaminated with known pesticides, herbicides and fungicides?

On May 9, 1973 the movie, “Soylent Green” was made. You may remember that people were killed to become the source of food to feed the growing population. The government told the people the “wafer products” they were consuming came from ocean vegetation. It took Charlton Heston to discover the truth that Soylent Green was created from human remains.

It’s now March 28, 2016; obesity has been classified an epidemic. Do you see any aggressive steps to conquering this condition/disease? We feed farm animals an unhealthy diet to “fatten them” making their slaughter more profitable. We feed our population an unhealthy diet which “fattens them” and typically leads to an earlier death. Is this all coincidental or are we blinding ourselves to a future we’ve already seen on the big screen in 1973?

I’m not serious about my analogy, but the point remains an interesting topic for discussion.

  10. Another great article…I am definitely not taking the advice of ads on the internet even it good ole Doc Oz has indorsed them…pretty sure he is getting a kick back of some sort….in my lil ole opinion..
.I take the advice from my doctor, nutritionist, whom I didn’t think I needed, but after meeting with her she was a real eye opener…..and has given me great advice and educational information, not an article on the internet…then there is listening to your body…if you can become in tuned to your own body and listen to what it is trying to tell you, your already ahead of the game…and finding friends that are knowledgably and willing to share their expertise with us all in the blogging world is a huge bonus….your education and wisdom that you put into your post are so helpful, and there many fitness trainers who are also willing to share there knowledge with us all…. .I also am on amazon looking up good deals on books about the health and needs of the special issues one may be facing in your life….mine is diabetic diets, arthritis foods and weight loss…of course I take the information I find in the books with a grain of salt, believe some, and leave the rest…but I always fall back on the ole, how is my body responding to it all…thanks for always making us think…I love that……kat

    1. Don’t be embarrassed. Many people foolishly assume that taking responsibility for one’s life and incorporating behavior that promotes healthy living results in better health.
NOPE. It’s all in the magic pill, the rubber latex clothing and the “wash away” obesity soap. Now I’ve let the secret out of the bag!

Hope your Easter brought you many egg whites (and happy times!)

  12. I liked Dr. Oz way back when but he’s like a charlatan now, always pushing some “miracle” product. I just can’t take him seriously. Good for you for explaining the how and why of a healthy lifestyle and the plain simple fact that it takes some serious effort.

    1. Lots of people seem to have lost faith in Dr. Oz. I’ll bet he is under enormous pressure from both the rating organizations as well as his colleagues. Celebrity status often damages the quality of many lives.

  13. Oh my…I read forskolin as “foreskin” LOL!!! Anyway, many people are fooled when they have health professionals with licenses and credentials promote such “miracle” products. So little focus is placed on nutrition in healthcare and many are turning to treatment with “pills” than prevention with how they fuel their bodies on a daily basis.

    1. I’ll bet you were not the only one to make that mistake!
I want people to realize the best answer for their weight management is located within their own body! Addressing the mental physical and emotional components together and working SLOWLY to modify ones lifestyle makes the task very achievable. Pills will never be a good answer.

watched him once in the dentist waiting room. Had to snapchat what he was saying to my other personal training friends….we laughed for awhile. Trying to promote 30 day challenges and calling food “bad food”. Nah….I rather pay attention to studies and what I learned through my certification and years of experience with fitness/nutrition. Millions of people buy into it though….sad.
