After finding this article on Yahoo Health, I decided it may be time to start reading some Tom Clancy novels. The actual title for the article dated January 11, 2016 was, “Cure for Obesity: Freeze-Dried Poop?” This article explores the possibilities that address Obesity by taking “poop” containing healthy bacteria, freeze-drying it and placing it in capsules for oral consumption. The concept behind this self treatment relies on restoring healthy bacteria in the gut necessary for digestion as well as hormonal regulation. Will this latest scientific solution be the missing piece of the puzzle to overcome our Obesity epidemic? Feel free to call me arrogant, but I believe this doesn’t stand a chance in (the residence where Satan is believed to reside.) I would be willing to bet my services to shovel animal “poop” at the local farm for a year if I am wrong!
Why am I so certain this latest research is a waste of time and money? Simple! The science behind this research can potentially only address qualities involving and affecting physical changes (ex. re-balancing hormonal function or re-balancing ratios of healthy to unhealthy bacteria in the gut.) It completely ignores the emotional difficulties many face suffering Obesity. What do you think the emotional consequences would be for those people suffering Obesity if they were subjected to ingesting “POOP” as a solution to their problem? When this fails, has anyone considered how devastating it would be for a person to be subjected to this embarrassing “therapeutic” treatment? Where are the psychologists and psychiatrist’s participation in this study? Most importantly,:
Why is the “HUMAN” component ignored when seeking solutions?
Just because fecal transplant has been successfully used to treat colon infections such as intestinal Clostridium Difficile (an infection resulting in Colitis {an inflammatory bowel disease commonly associated with intestinal bleeding, }) what makes scientists, researchers and doctors blind to the fact these two very different conditions (Intestinal Clostridium Difficile and Obesity) can’t simply be treated with the same fecal matter and achieve similar healthy outcomes?
.
Never in a million years! That’s lower than reaching the bottom, so to speak

I was so appalled by this research, I felt compelled to write about it. One must ask, who is really most likely to benefit from the results of this research? Although the pharmaceutical industry has developed many products that have positively impacted many lives, this is more likely to generate revenue than “cure” obesity.
Thank you for taking the time to read the article. People must be protected from these unrealistic “stand alone” “cures.”

Sounds like “snake oil cure” from the past. I read where long ago women swallowed tapeworms to lose weight. You know, I got so desperate I might have done that too! God only knows! LOL!

This is why I started my blog site. As a doctor I wanted people to be exposed to credible, unbiased information to base their own health decisions on. Many people are not provided true informed consent. Their options are limited by the practitioners beliefs. This is a position doctors do not have the right to place themselves in. Patients are entitled to ALL options. The doctor can state their preferences, but should never take responsibility for the final decision.

Personally I believe one of the main causes of obesity are the highly addictive substances deliberately added to food in order to line manufactures pockets – so sad. Often people are looked down on for being overweight, but the real villains are manufacturers.
Add to this a lack of nutritional education. If for example folks understood sugar is reckoned to be as addictive as heroin (and triggers similar brain responses) perhaps they’d check the labels – amazing what that stuff goes in!

You mentioned how addictive food substances (like sugar) are. People do know in many cases their behavior is destructive yet continue to “feed” the frenzy. This is a complicated issue that needs various components addressed at the same time to improve the outcome. The article I read and wrote about will blindly make this population of people even more uncomfortable than they already are. We, in the health field, call this SOLUTIONS?

Habits are hard to break, especially habits linked to addictive responses in the brain!!!

Now we’re talking root causes. It bothers me greatly when I see science approaching a HUMAN health problem from the perspective of treatment and “cure” with some type of “substance.” It certainly may be a contribution, but to reduce a HUMAN to a mere chemical imbalance and focus on addressing this issue alone does a disservice to the patient and the health care community as a whole.

Holy Shit, what will they think of next.
Actually, hold on, maybe Holy shit might work…..

I’ve reviewed the article and I can’t find any reference to a religious blessing of this (let’s call it product) although I’m certain those marketing this “product” would gladly add the “holy” credentials to its efficacy. To me, it’s just a bunch of “POOP”! 😀

Thanks again for the article. Just wanted to stop in and tell you that while I am still not well after two months since my miscarriage, I believe I am on the road to recovery. With that, I have not only switched my primary doctor but also my ENT. In addition, I made an appointment with a holistic endocrinologist who I believe will be someone very helpful to have on my ” team.” This entire time my chiropractor has been my guide and encouragement. On paper I am pretty much perfect according to most but still doesn’t take away from the fact I am very aware of my health and body and know something is or was wrong. I wish more used other tests to detect issues. Anyways, in the meantime I have really been focusing on an alkaline rich diet and many of my issues have started to go away. Now, my biggest symptom is itchy skin. Hoping this is detoxing, anyways sorry for the ramble. Just wanted to say I appreciate the posts and information.

When a person has the need to express themselves, it is NEVER viewed as “rambling.” It is viewed (in my mind) as a healthy release.
Glad to see you’re making headway on your recovery. Sounds like your approach will open doors to new opportunities to discover underlying issues that conventional medicine doesn’t evaluate and treat.
Patience is a difficult request, but typically provides the best outcomes. Wishing you continued health improvement through the process.

Maybe it wasn’t the best post to post this on. Still find so much of what I am finding out through my own experience to be unbelievable on so many levels 😁

Your willingness to share your feelings and emotions will help other people who read these comments. It helps identify issues in life that many believe are their issues alone. Your willingness to share will help people realize they are NOT alone!

I would rather stay obese. How disgusting. I understand the connection of the mind to our food consumption which is one reason I turned down the bariatric surgery my dr wanted. I need to fix my head and I have no control over that unfortunately. I crave. I eat when bored. I am a compulsive eater, etc. that doesn’t mix with the surgery or the band.

Recognizing one’s own limitations is important. Learning what it takes to overcome these limitations provides new opportunities to overcome many health conditions and symptoms. Finding alternative activities (rather than alternative vices) that substitute and satisfy underlying compulsive issues is one method many use to find better paths in life. I hope one day you are able to discover your alternative activities to lighten the burden you deal with.

I’m grateful for those voices who sound the alarm on stuff like this–poopy nonsense that isn’t helping hurting people recover. Thank You! Anything that leaves emotional balance and mental health out of the equation is bound to fail when addressing addictive behaviors like compulsive overeating. There is no “one and done” approach that helps with addiction. Remissions is as good as it gets, and keeping sobriety in tact is a life-long process of inventory work and checking in with a program that works for you.
Don’t worry, Doc. I can’t see you shoveling poo because you lost your bet anytime soon. 🙂

Thank you Lori. You express the emotional component very well. Life is dynamic; to assume tomorrow will be a replication of today is naive. We adapt to constant change although, cognitively, we may not be aware of these changes. Good health comes from an internal balance of system integration (IF provided the tools necessary to optimally function) as well as an external balance between us and the environment we live in. This is a challenging, but worthwhile BALANCE to achieve.

It takes persistence and effort, but for the food addict there is no other path. It’s not about food, its about how we process everything in life, including food choices, exercise, meditation, self-help, cognitive behaviors, and a host of other “stuff” that goes into recovery. So not a one-stop-shop where addiction is involved.

Freeze dried poop? What the heck will they think of next?! If people would just get rid of processed food and get moving, they wouldn’t need this yucky freeze dried poop! By the way, Tom Clancy is one great author.

I have a suggestion. Take the fecal capsules and place them in close proximity to the 10-20% comfort food as a reminder to keep this type of food within the 10-20% range. Exceed that amount and ……..bon appetit……. 😀
Side Note: I read, “The Sum Of All Fears” with a memo pad and pen. I needed to do this to keep track of all the different characters in the book. I felt pretty stupid, but enjoyed the story too much to let my ego get in the way. 🙂

LOL That was a great book. I think I can stay in the 10-20% range without the fecal reminder. Laughing so hard.

This whole line of research is truly “Caca Grande!” I would be shocked if those very components they are trying to utilize cannot be found in healthy natural food sources!
I have learned if you can’t figure out what is eating you, you can’t stop eating it! Get to the root/core/cause of the obesity! Once that is investigated and worked through only then can real long-term weight control can happen!
