CHOOSING BETWEEN FOOD AND DRUGS WHILE UNDERGOING CANCER TREATMENT

cancer-fighting-foodsAfter recently seeing an advertisement for a new drug (Neulasta) that is used during chemotherapy to increase white blood cell production I had to write this post. White blood cells are the cells the body naturally produces to defend against foreign invaders. When you here the term “immune system” think “white blood cells.” Since the poisons used in chemotherapy severely damage the immune system, drug companies have thought it advantageous to develop a drug to cause white blood cell proliferation. Neulasta is one of the more recent drugs to hit the market with this intent. It is important to realize if this drug is needed, it means the patient has already experienced severe immune compromise as a result of the chemotherapy treatment. Why turn to Neulasta (another drug with dangerous side effects,) while in this weakened state when HEALTHY options are available? Neulasta lists the following side effects (this is only a partial list):

(1) Rupture of the spleen, (2) acute respiratory distress syndrome, (3) serious allergic reactions, and (4)“potential for tumor growth stimulatory effects on malignant cells. This means that this drug can increase the rate at which cancer can grow and potentially spread to other areas of the body. If any of these side effects are experienced, additional drugs are prescribed to help counter the effects of the original drug. When a patient has already undergone traditional cancer treatment, do they really need to suffer side effects from additional drugs?

There is another method to increase white blood cell production. A nutritional protocol has been developed resulting in the same beneficial outcome (increased white blood cell production) and can be found at the following link:

 IMMUNITY CANCER PROTOCOL

“Dr. Sandra Miller has focused her research for more than 30 years on the cells of the body’s immune system, especially natural killer (NK) cells instrumental in seeking out and destroying newly formed cancer cells. She formulated “the immunity cancer cure” — her cancer-fighting eating regimen, as an outgrowth of her studies on enhancement of the immune system in the presence of cancer by using substances derived from plants.” (This content comes directly from the link above.)

Dr. Miller’s approach helps strengthen the immune system WITHOUT causing ANY harm to the body. There are no side effects which means additional drugs to counter side effects are unnecessary. When the body is already weakened as a result of traditional cancer therapy, why use additional drugs that increase toxicity to the body with potential lethal side effects when specific foods can offer the same benefits (increased white blood cell production) while encouraging healthier outcomes and improving the quality of life?

This is just another example of choice for the cancer patient. I place these posts and links to show the information is well researched with legitimate clinical outcomes. Don’t believe that choices are not available. Why choose drug therapy and its potential for further damage during cancer treatments when healthy choices are available?

TV is obviously an effective tool spreading the drug industry’s messages and costs millions of dollars. I rely on the old fashion method. I share my research in a post and allow the readers to decide for themselves the validity of its content. Those intrigued and willing to do their own due diligence can spread the message (if they agree with its content.) This is how we can spread new truths so more people can have greater options in health care decisions. I hope you find this information valuable enough to share it as well. The pharmaceutical industry has a financial motive to convince the consumer; my motivation ends with caring about people.

  1. Interesting post.
Just goes to show with a little application you can get the same results without the need for toxic drugs.
    Thanks for sharing.

    1. Slowly, people will start requesting these effective treatments in place of dangerous drugs as a first line of defense. Feeding the body essential nutrients is the most effective method to strengthen its capabilities. More people are beginning to recognize these facts and are starting to request this approach to healthcare. Empowering people makes for a healthier and happier nation.

      1. I hope this happens because the main thing that will come from it (apart from healthier people) is the drug companies will no longer have the hold over the human race that it currently does. I know that sounds a bit political but it is true. I am lucky to have the Dr that I have, he almost refuses to give out tablets unless he can really see a benefit from them, he nearly always offers advice first. The way it should be.

            1. If people only knew how deeply committed I am to seeing them achieve the level of health and happiness THEY CHOOSE for THEMSELVES, they would understand my writing style and purpose. Life is very complicated and health issues are as complicated as life itself. I try to be as diplomatic as possible. I feel a great deal of compassion and understanding for people and realize that change can be terrifying. My writing often removes the “blindfold” and shows greater options in life. The problem is, it also requires the consumer to become more involved in life’s choices. Some people prefer to live a life without choices because it is less complicated. Some people become incentivized and motivated with the new knowledge and grow in character and personality to levels never anticipated. Each person has the right to choose the life that satisfies their wants and needs. I hope the information I provide adds value to people’s lives.
Stay healthy and happy my friend.

              1. I agree with all that you say on this score. We are the masters of our own destiny but many of us can only react to what we have put in front of us. I am very lucky to have a Doc who appears to be similar to you in as much as there are options and the best ones aren’t always the easiest but knowing that he will support me in what I choose, makes it so much easier.
I will be true to myself and because of that I shall stay happy and healthy even if this pain in my neck/back keeps pissing me off!!

  2. I’m all for learning about complimentary forms of therapy and have a strong interest in biologics… part of the reason I now work in preventive care as opposed to sick care…

Every time I see a pharmaceutical commercial on TV, I’m amazed at how cleverly they portray images that evoke emotions during the part where they state the never-ending list of side effects, which of course, is required by law. A lot of time, work, and effort must go into deciding just what those images will be, in order to take the viewers mind off of what they should be hearing about the potential side effects at that time – talk about manipulation!

And then of course, worse than that, is how the drugs are prescribed so early on… (despite their years in development) and then are possibly pulled from the market by the FDA after serious things happen to real people who are just trying to trust their doctors… but then big pharma can always fall back on those marketing disclaimers and still stay, “see – we warned you…”

Luckily, my own MD waits a few years before she will prescribe anything newly released to the market.

    1. As a nurse, your words are powerful. You have seen the industry from the inside and know the reality and truths. As reader’s gain a new perspective, their willingness to simply accept any doctor’s recommendation as gospel will change. They will ask more questions and politely demand more options. This is good for the healthcare system as well as the patient. It will open the eyes of more doctors to realizing that western medicine is NOT the ONLY approach that offers answers to everyday illnesses and chronic health maladies. Future health will likely be viewed as a “team approach” with varying opinions from various types of healthcare professionals.

I do everything I can do to make people aware of how important it is to be proactive about your health so they can stay out of hospitals… and I hope to see more time and resources devoted to the side of prevention in the future – it really is where healthcare needs to focus. 3. My dad healed his cancer with healthy foods + surgery + radiotherapy (low dose), I convinced him not to get chemotherapy. I am so glad he listened, as back then I was not in medschool but I had begun reading medical papers on nutrition and cancer especially after his diagnosis.

In fact, my dear aunt (a doctor too), passed away 2 years ago, after getting a very high dose of chemotherapy which caused liver failure.

Unless there is NO other way of treatment, chemotherapy should be avoided, I think. People underestimate the power of proper nutrition. There are many foods containing Vitamin B17, which is known to kill cancer cells.

I’m glad there are many more people thinking this way! Loved this post and the nutrition plan!

    1. I am very thankful you shared your family’s story. These are real life situations and greatly impact readers more so than all the research I can ever share. When people are diagnosed with cancer their fear guides many of their decisions. They rely on the honesty and integrity of doctors that recommend treatments. Patients must realize that doctors are LIMITED BY THEIR EDUCATION. Those taught a traditional allopathic model will provide traditional choices learned in school. This does NOT make them bad doctors; it simply limits their knowledge of effective efficacious treatments outside of their education. Doctors should encourage patients to seek options from various healthcare practitioners. I do, however, feel shame and anger for doctors who intentionally create fear in patients seeking less invasive options that offer comparable results.

  5. Here’s a recent news article, just saying it might make sense to consider that when you are dealing with cancer, it is a lot of about getting quick treatment: http://news.nationalpost.com/health/cancer-patients-are-losing-valuable-time-and-risking-their-lives-with-alternative-therapies-doctors-say

and yes, of course it makes sense to eat healthy. but as i see it, the Neulasta is a boost drug similar to the ones used when your immune system is dangerously low (been there myself).

plus, every body is different and reacts different. my doc + medical team figured out a slightly different medication for each patient, and kept adjusting during the treatment. so i guess there is no real standard diet, and looking at the amount of pills, i’d say it might be good to consider to have a doc that surveys and checks.

and chemo: it’s tough, yes, but it’s not as dramatic as it used to be, especially when you try all to help and support your body with yoga, nutrition, sleep, daily walks etc. during that time. It’s much tougher to have to face the reality that cancer takes over, like in the examples in the newspaper article.

    1. Thank you so much for your comment and all the information you relayed. In general, non western approaches to disease (including cancer) have great validity that many in the western world deny. When defending one’s position, it is common to provide an example of a patient that underwent a certain course of treatment and “died as a result.” This is found in EVERY APPROACH to treating cancer. We seem to believe if a person died while undergoing chemo, radiation or surgery it was meant to be. Doctors that practice western medicine without the knowledge and education in other forms of healthcare have no right to dissuade patients from choosing these paths. It would be arrogant of us to believe we have exclusive knowledge especially with our poor track record in general.

The purpose of this article was to share knowledge showing additional methods exist producing the same desired outcomes without the dangerous potential side effects. This does NOT mean to suggest that drugs are useless. It is meant to show that healthier more conservative approaches should be offered as options to fulfill the medical legal requirement of INFORMED CONSENT. People should have the right to decide for themselves without biased interpretation by any physician (traditional allopath or complimentary specialist.)

It is unfortunate, but people will die from cancer whether they receive chemo or nutrition. If the goal of traditional cancer treatment ends with life extension (rather than improving the quality of living) have we truly helped the patient or simply improved the revenue stream for a profession? It is our job as physicians to provide and satisfy our patient’s needs; not our personal wants and desires. If we don’t understand treatments outside of our education, we have the option to learn and study it. To deny its reality or legitimacy without approaching it using the same level of commitment we approached our own education does a disservice to our patients and fellow colleagues.

There is no one right method. Doctors should ALWAYS be open minded and accepting of new ideas. This does not mean they have to practice these approaches. I am certain that history will demonstrate that an integrative approach using various treatments based on individual cases will ultimately provide the best outcomes for patients. This process, however, will be delayed as long as traditional practitioners refuse to accept the legitimacy of valid treatments other than surgery, chemo and radiation.

  6. This is scary. I watch those commercials for different drugs on TV, which help with different ailments, at the end of the ad, they list the potential side affects and many are worse than the original condition. Aren’t there times that the FDA should refuse to approve these drugs? If they are the watchdog responsible for protecting us, I don’t understand how they can do this. And shouldn’t all doctors prescribe the healthy (natural) options first. Or am I just naive? Have a wonderful day my friend.

    1. The truth is scary. Our regulatory agencies are often run by people that were previously employed by the pharmaceutical companies. Many of the board members of the FDA and CDC receive financial compensation as well. If this isn’t a conflict of interest, I’m not sure what is!

This is a “for profit” business. It is NOT unethical for these companies to sell their drugs (products.) It is unethical for doctors to only offer these choices to patients when it is there responsibility to provide INFORMED CONSENT. We, as doctors, do NOT have the right to impose our biases when providing options of care. This, however, is common in today’s practice. As more consumers become aware of options that provide comparable results WITHOUT side effects in a HEALTHY manner, traditional doctors will be forced to re-evaluate their current approach. Medical doctors provide a valuable service; they simply need to recognize they their services have limitations just like ANY healthcare provider

      1. This is terrifying. I have always kept up with politics and current events, but I had no idea of the regulatory agencies relationship with the pharmaceutical companies. A couple of years ago I read “The Omnivore’s Dilemma.” It hit me like a shock to my system, and honestly you just did the same. Honestly, I don’t know what to say. If doctors are informing their patients of all healthy options, we are in trouble. I guess I have to seriously take health care decisions into my own hands. Thank you so much for enlightening me. Have a good day.

        1. Simply recognizing that healthcare is a “business” is the first step. “For profit” businesses have responsibilities to stock holders in a business world. I don’t believe the medical field aims to hurt people for profit. I do believe they have a service and a product to sell and are willing to do so whether or not a better service or product is available. This is where I draw the line on ethics and morals. Each person, however, must make that decision for themselves. Western medicine is currently in a transitional state. Functional and integrative medicine (a faction of the medical field) is gaining influence and becoming more popular. Future generations of doctors are going to be attracted to its model. I believe this will be beneficial to both doctors and patients.
          Stay healthy and happy.

  8. I believe the key to keeping our immune systems working well is to actually start now in keeping it strong by eating those power foods. I hear so many incredible things about how eating garlic can increase your white blood cells, and those eating garlic actually have more of those wonderful immune cells in their bodies than those who do not.

My questions, Dr. J., is if a person is required to increase their white blood cells due to cancer, how long does it take to build up the numbers by eating the right foods vs, taking the medication?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. You pose an excellent question. Whether it’s medicine or food, each individual responds differently. In both cases, the process (if the drug or food is effective for the individual body) is short. Food creates an immediate response based on the “information” it supplies to the body. This includes its effects on our genetic composition. Drugs also create an immediate response, however this response is achieved by “forcing the body” to perform unnaturally (hence the potential side effects.) More importantly, these foods help sustain the elevated levels because they continue to be a healthy source of nutrition. The levels are only temporarily raised with the drugs since they are used “as needed.”

We should not wait for disease or the damaging effects of inflammation and degeneration to reverse our approach to achieving and maintaining better health. Keeping a healthy body HEALTHY is far more effective and efficient than attempting to reverse disease on a recurring basis.

You can also view this from the perspective that food protocols should be implemented BEFORE the immune system is destroyed by chemo, whereas, Neulasta (the drug in question) is only utilized once the damage is objectively identified. If we know that chem is going to damage the immune system, where is the logic in waiting for the damage before intervening?

    1. We should all be entitled to make our own personal decisions regarding the choices of available treatments. In many cases, traditional allopaths are unaware of options outside of pharmaceutical intervention, surgery and radiation. This does NOT invalidate the efficacy of these additional treatments. We need to begin to recognize it is the patient that directs us (the doctors.) It is our job to provide information and referrals (when available choices are outside our scope of knowledge) so the patient can gain additional important information. It is the patient’s job to ultimately decide which treatment protocol best aligns with their beliefs. A patient committed to a provider and treatment protocol usually experiences the best outcomes.

    1. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and your husband’s cancer story. One of the things I teach my patients is to focus on the strategies in life that prevent disease from occurring or re-occurring. If we know we have implemented the necessary changes to provide our bodies with the tools needed to maximize good health, symptoms (although still a concern) become less fearful. This provides a new level of self confidence and self control. This is an important state of belief because it has a physiological affect on the body as well.

Research, learn and implement the available knowledge that makes sense to you. You will find this approach toward health significantly enhances quality living. Feel free to stop by again with any questions or comments you may have.
Stay healthy and happy. (Send my best thoughts to your husband as well.)

For a long time I’ve taken Enbrel for psoriasis that is aggravated by psych drugs. Enbrel suppresses the immune system and people that take Enbrel are three times more likely to get Hodgkins Lymphoma and aggressive bacterial diseases. After 7 years on Enbrel, My body was covered in Red, Raised Lesions. I went to a bunch of derms, all of whom said it was Dermatitis and gave me massive doses of Cortisone for it. Some of the derms were bigoted against working with mentally ill patients. I had a dermatologist warn me not to ‘act up,’ or he would fire me. In the end, I went to the best dermatologist in town, who ran his own independent biopsy and determined that it was a bacterial disease so rare that it’s not even found on the internet. Furthermore, I had to take an old, forgotten about antibiotic for a year. The antibiotic is so obscure that it, too, is not on the internet. In the end, I reduced my Enbrel from four times a month to once a month. I still have more active psoriasis, but I want my immune system to be stronger than what Enbrel will allow. My life is short enough already without Cancer coming to get me sooner than anticipated. I eat superfoods like a rabbit in heat. My salads have 8 vegetables in them, including Watercress, which is sort of bitter but is said to ‘cleanse the blood,’ according to the Edgar Cayce readings. BipolarBrainiac

You are a smart lady for eating those “superfoods.” Epigenetics is an upcoming science showing that food has the capability to turn genes on and off. This shows that we have greater control over our DNA than previously understood. In most cases health answers are found in natural products our body’s need and want. Again, in most cases our body’s were not born pharmaceutically deficient. Follow a balanced lifestyle and watch the benefits unfold right before your eyes. Keep researching and learning as much as you can. No one cares more about your welfare and health than YOU!

    1. My goal is to provide information so the public can make the best INFORMED decisions for themselves. In a capitalist system, Big Business has an advantage by influencing policy decisions. They invest time and resources in those responsible for creating regulations and laws. In most cases, this is legally acceptable. In some cases, however, the question is better expressed whether the ethical and moral ramifications extend beyond the boundaries of decency.
The public must accept responsibility as well. Big industry provides answers the public wants. Whether it’s pharmaceutical or agricultural, we have followed what we believe is the “easiest path.” Taking pharmaceuticals as a first line of defense against conditions and diseases; choosing highly processed foods and those treated with pesticides, fungicides and herbicides and burying our heads in the sand regarding the right to know what is in our foods (ex. GMO) have all caused controversy that potentially has compromised the health and well being of our nation.
I am NOT pointing fingers at Big Business. If we as consumers told them we wanted different options, they would creatively develop new options that would satisfy their financial needs while satisfying the consumer’s as well. We must get beyond the blame game and begin improving communication to create a winning scenario for ALL.

  15. I’ve taken neulasta during chemo – not because my neutrophil count was low, but because the Dr expected the counts to drop, so insisted on me taking the medication. The side effects were horrible! Much worse than chemo!

Though I discovered a wonderful, science and oncologist approved, approach that meant I had almost no side effects from chemo, so pretty much everything was worse than chemo.

After I had such severe side effects from neulasta, I refused to take it again, my Dr drew my blood at nadir, when he expected my count to bottom out, but instead of a low count, my count was perfectly normal.

What trick is it? Easier than the above diet protocol (in many ways). I fasted. for 72 hours pre chemo and 5 hours post. Virtually no side effects. No weight loss, no decreased energy. And I didn’t need to think about what I ate, because when I wasn’t fasting, I ate what I wanted.

I appreciate western medicine, but I also appreciate the natural approach. Thanks for sharing.
